JD4500 John Deere
4500 4x4
Model Year: 2000

The 4500 is an extremely reliable tractor and seems to be the perfect size. It's large enough to handle a 6-foot brush hog but still can get in fairly tight spots. The starters and fuel shutoff are a little cheap, and have a tendency to go bad but are inexpensive to replace. Over all I love the tractor and can't imagine not having it!

Pros: Reverser transmission, plenty if power
Cons: Starters, fuel shutoff are junk

JD4500 John Deere
A Very Useful Tractor
Model Year: 2003

I purchased my JD 4500 from the seller of my recent household purchase. My property has just under 3 acres of which about half is natural Colorado high desert. This utility vehicle has proven to be invaluable with a mower deck, a Fimco 50 Gal sprayer, a fork lift attachment and a snow blade. The only task the system proved too light for was pulling a mired 3/4 ton pickup truck out of its frame on the ground challenge. The truck proved to be just a bit to heavy for the JD.

Pros: Easy to use, reliable, fuel efficient.
Cons: Safety switch in seat prevents PTO utilization without being on the tractor.

JD4500 John Deere
Great Tractor
Model Year: 2001

I bought this tractor used about 5 years ago it had 500 hrs. on it and now I have 1600 on it. It has been a great machine, moving snow, rocks dirt and trees. The hoe is very powerful and I've moved a lot of big rock with this machine. Also I've added a thumb to the back bucket to pick logs and rocks. I've also done a bunch of modifications like adding hooks on the front bucket & rear hoe. I've also made a custom chain box between the driver seat and the hoe seat. There was absolutely no landscaping ever done around my house or around any of the stone rows. It has taken me about 4 years to cleanup and excavate the yard to some uniformity. I’m proud to say without owning this machine it would never look the way it does now. Recently I had to re-shim all the connecting pins of the pivot points on the hoe. It was getting very sloppy and you could hear the hypos thrashing around.

Pros: Strong hoe.
Cons: Bucket hydros were never evenly matched. This machine has the quick connect bucket so picking it up and taking it off has been challenging at times.

JD 4500, 460 Loader and Forks
Model Year: 1999

My 4WD 4500 is reliable and has plenty of power for mowing grass with 6' Land Pride finish mower and brush hogging with 5' Ford brush hog. This tractor starts very easily even in very cold weather. The forks used with the FEL allowed me to handle pallets for my beekeeper activities. Only problem I have had is that the differential lock does not engage so I cannot lock the rear wheels. It is very good on fuel, especially compared to my old, smaller gasoline tractor.

Pros: Power, reliability, fuel economy.
Cons: Differential lock does not work.

I bought it used from an individual who turned out to be "not totally upfront" and had issues that should have made me think twice about the purchase. It had a fresh paint job and the hour meter did not work upon inspection. I think it was a trade-in that the guy got his hands on and tried to make some money or realized HE just got bit and was unloading it quick. The price was right but I had to have some front end repairs within a year that cost $1200, so much for the good price. The other complaint is the plastic parts. I am getting ready to have to spend $800 in replacement parts and am looking at having fabbed out of sheet metal, but I think it is going to be cost prohibitive. The tractor is strong and reliable, just the little B.S. from cheap cosmetics.

Pros: Cosmetics.
Cons: Reliability & durability.

Ergonomics
Model Year: 1999

My opinion is this tractor was designed and built for a miniature type person. Controls are too close together and difficult to grab/access/twist/turn. Other than that, the tractor is fantastic.

Pros: All but controls.
Cons: Controls, layout and accessibility. distance between same.

JD4500 John Deere
JD 4500 with loader and backhoe
Model Year: 2000

I'm very happy with this tractor. The only real problem I've had is when it wouldn't start due to a corroded socket on one of the fuses. I cleaned it and it has been okay. The loader is very strong and will lift the back wheels if something heavy isn't on the three point hitch. The selection of loader attachments is limited since it uses a proprietary JD attachment, but an adapter is available for standard skid loader attachments. In the lowest gear the bucket is a bit slow for the ground speed and it moves to fast when blowing deep snow (over 18"). I wish I had bought the creeper for those applications. Watch out for corroding of the radiator from battery acid. I replaced the battery with a sealed unit and cleaned up the rust. The 8.00x16 R-1 front tires are kind of light for loader work.

Pros: Strong loader, plenty of gears except not low enough.
Cons: The battery corrodes the radiator; proprietary loader attachments.
