MF245 Massey Ferguson
245 Massey Ferguson and 5' Volunteer Cutter
Model Year: 1979

I just bought a Massey Ferguson 245 and a 5' volunteer bush hog and put them to use on a couple of fields that haven't been touched in probably 2 yrs. I really wasn't sure how they would do, but the two of them worked together flawlessly and the fields look great now. I'd heard good things about the Massey and so far everyone's right, it's a great tractor. I'd never heard of the volunteer bush hog and couldn't find much info about them so I was a little concerned about it, but so far it's really doing good. It cuts great and runs quite and I couldn't ask for a better cutter.

Pros: Runs and cuts great.
Cons: Massey breaks could be a little better.

New tractor to us. Came with a Massey 232 loader. Seems to have the usual Massey/Perkins issues (leaks oil like a sieve). Otherwise seems to be solid and strong. Starts on the first or second crank. Relatively well maintained---new paint, clutch, and a few other parts. No complaints so far. Will update over time as we get a few more hours on her.

Pros: Solid strong efficient no-frills machine with good support.
Cons: It's old, so there are always going to ongoing maintenance issues.

Great little tractor. A little light in the rear with the front end loader so have installed dual rear wheels. Improves performance no end!

Pros: Really economical.
Cons: PTO clutch takes getting used to.

Good little tractor. Does everything I ever ask of it. No major repairs ever needed. For the age it has only had to have a gasket replaced, oil pump and a solonoid replaced through the last 5 years.

Pros: Reliability.
Cons: Parts harder to find due to age.

I bought my Massey Ferguson from a friend of mine who made me a great deal. It's been a very reliable tractor. About the only problem I've had was the fuel pump going out. It drained all the fuel down into the crankcase. Luckily I noticed it before any damage was done. Got that repaired and the only other issue was the water pump going out. I replaced that myself and it's been running well ever since.

Pros: Well built.
Cons: None to speak of.

Massey Ferguson MF245 Tractor
Model Year: 1982

I bought this tractor to support my needs for my 8.5 acre property. Use it for mowing 2 acres. Been very reliable. Recently (04/2012) replaced the diesel injector pump with a new aftermarket, because it was leaking badly. The job was not as bad as I suspected. Tractor runs great. However, now I have my power steering cylinder line leaking. I will have some new ones made locally to replace them. Other than that so far it's been a great tractor.

Pros: Plenty of power, strong tractor, runs great.
Cons: Old. Will need things replaced as time goes on.

Retired Farmer
Model Year: 1978

I am a farm boy at heart--born and raised on 196 acre farm in south Texas. My dad raised 15 kids on this farm (peanuts and cotton). We all learned to operate and work on our own equipment. I am glad I found this site of like-minded people so I and receive help from others. I bought this MF 20C and my 4 sons have a ball fixing the small problems it has.

Pros: It's a good tractor, just set for a while.
Cons: Needs more weight on rear axle.

I purchased this tractor in 1989. It's primary job is brush hogging with a six foot Bush Hog. I have nothing but praise for my Massey All it wants to do is go... set the rpm's at 15-1600 and and after a long day the fields look great. Grease it, add 10-12 gallons of diesel. Check the coolant and fluid levels the next morning and away you go. I follow the PM schedule so I never have to add oil between services. It truly is a work horse.

Pros: CHEAP TO KEEP WORKS HARD
Cons: Doesn't look good I like the petrefied rear tires no flats
