I'm sort of toying with the idea of buying a planter to plant corn next year. The JD 71s seem very popular but it looks like they are no longer made and even used they fetch a pretty high price. There's an eBay dealer out of Amarillo that sells them for about $350 for a one row.

I happened across the Cole website. The 12 Mx looks interesting but I know nothing about the quality or price. They indicate that it is designed to handle rocks and obstacles well, but it does not look particularly sturdy.

Anyone know anything about these? How much they cost?

Thanks.

Deere 71's are still made, only with the brand name of Yetter on them. Yetter built the 71 for Deere. When JD dropped them from their line-up, Yetter bought sales rights. They command a healthy price.

The 71 Deere is probably the best plate-type unit planter ever built. Most seed corn growers used them because of their gentle handling of seed and extremely accurate planting. They're absolutely the best at planting fast on a rough seedbed.

Cole makes a good planter. Cole/Covington planters aren't cheap either. Dealers/distributors are rather few. They seem to be more popular in the southeast. I know a couple guys with Cole planters. They seem fairly pleased with them.

Thanks, I could not remember the name of who made the JD 71. I went to the Yetter web site and there are several dealers here in SC that have them. I'm assuming they will cost more than a refurbed used JD. Cole has no dealers in North or South Carolina, nearest one would be near Atlanta.

The Coles look more primative than the Flex 71s but from what you are saying it does not sound like they are junk so at least I'll have an idea regarding value if I come across a used one. Thanks.

Local NH/Massey dealer sells Cole/Covington planters and I think a new one is around 2K. This is for a One Row Planting Unit with Opening foot, and Cultivator.

Yikes! For that kind of money I think I'll just get the family back out there poking a hole in the ground with a stick!:D

I sell the used/refurbished 71 deere planters for 400-450/row which is a little bit less than 1/2 price of new ones from yetter. If interested drop an email on here. Thanks

Hi George,

I have been looking and keeping an eye open, too. Fogle's down at Neeses sells new Covington's as well as used planters he gets from auctions, etc. A new 1 row Covington (with fert hopper) and cultivator runs around $900 as best I can remember. I don't recall what his quote was for a 2 row, (TP46). You can give him a call and ask. Also ask what he has got used, too. 803-263-4240

It's good to also have a separate cultivator to run between your rows of beans, etc after they come up to help with the weeds, too.

That's not a bad deal Tritonman. Where are you located?
