I have a 42' by 64' barn with a concrete floor and 20X20 pad by the front doors. The back door area drops off maybe three ft and I want to add fill to make it a 20ft wide by 15 ft long ramp.
I have used some two inch field stones for some fill and want to add some "packing" type gravel to finish off the ramp. These doors would only be used in dry weather only.
The question is, do I want #304 gravel (1 1/2" to dust) gravel or #411 (3/4" to dust gravel? I don't know a lot about this but I do inow that all smaller gravel would just roll around and slide down. These two types of gravel are commonly used around here and readily available.
Between these two choices what is your pick? I need a little help here.

I have used both, always over fabric first, never seem to notice any difference.

Spread no more than 2" layers at a time, wet down then compact.

I always put a thin layer of #57 on top to keep the wheels from running in the sand/wet sand layer that forms on the top.

Thanks. I plan to have this 10" thick in some spots with a taper to the ramp. Any glaring problems you see? i don't want to use fabric because I filled in wth a fair amount of small 2" to 4" rocks from the field.
I rarely go out the back way and figured to let nature compact and I would smooth next spring if needed. The ramp is only maybe 15ft long (18' W) and, ironically, poured by relatives originally from LaGrange.

hello hope this helps i work daily in construction and use stone for all types of needs, and if it was me i'd use the 304's they will set like concrete after there in for a short while and settle top with 57's keeps down the tracking when they get wet, the 411-d is good stuff but best used in open cut ditch in a road that u want to keep from settling, similar stone but still prefer the 304's

Sounds like a plan. I think you will be satisfied. I would at least drive over it, as you put it down to compact it some.

304's it is and tomorrow morning is the plan. I'll compact the best I can and feel comfortable it will work. Thanks to both of you.

"Crusher run" is a generic term that is unfortunately used to describe all these products. There are about a dozen different products that are referred to just as "crusher run".

If you want a specific product for sure, you need to order it by a more specific name.

-2 crusher run is the same as #304. -2 being the mill name, and #304 being the DOT designation.

Just ask for #304 and thats what you will get.

Put down your drive in 2" layers, wet and compact between layers. I highly recommend a layer or "cap" of #57 (3/4") stone, on top.

Why put the 3/4 on top? Just curious. I'll need more gravel for my drive too. Still tryin' to figure this gravel stuff out.

The top of the drive with just #304 is mostly sand and dust when dry, this turns into a wet cement like material in the spring, and during the rainy season. Both get tracked into the garage and the house. And the wet stuff can be messy on the vehicles.

A thin layer of #57 prevents the tires, or your shoes from contacting the problem. The drive also looks much better with the "cap".
