Took a vacation to go snail hunting. Saw 5 and was able to catch 3 before they go away.

Ohh - You must change the resturants you visit. The fast food variety will not serve " Escargots ".:p

Egon,
You'd think that by now, Texans would have figured out a way to barbeque snails.

I like escargot! :D:D It is the nice garlic based dressing that makes them taste so good. Same goes for Calamari, only there its the sauce that does wonders for them.:D:D

Neither really have barbecue potential but there is always the first time.:D:p

Hi Rox,
Interesting story you wrote.
I love escargot but it is an expensive appetizer here in So Cal. I think it's great you guys can hunt down your own. I've hunted snails myself, but not to eat. Mostly to get rid of them in my gardens. I didn't even use a waste basket either, but chased them down on foot and spread pellets.
BTW, what caliber waste paper basket does your husband use?:D

Rob
We use a pie tin filled with beer in the garden slugs love it and for some reason die after they drink it. We make a divit in ground so tin is flush with the soil to make it easy to get to it.

you can use the cheep stuf they dont care

That's interesting about using beer to attract them like you and RobertN talk about.
Do you think it's because American snails and slugs are lushes?
Do the French use wine?:)

I'm afraid that the only thing I'd attact with a pie tin of beer, is my neighbors.:)

I've had escargot several times. I like it, but I think I'd like anything suatee'd in that much butter! To me, they are a bit chewy without a great deal of flavor.....but who knows if what I had was of decent quality? I would imagine that fresh ones, just like anything else, would be best.

I imagine you're probably right, but to tell you the truth, I don't think I could tell the difference from fresh dead and frozen dead for who knows how long?:) Although I do like them. I like the suatee'd flavor the most, I guess.

beer really is great for killing slugs. I just set it out in dinner plates and they find it, no problem.

Y'all are more then welcome to my share of snails. I've decided I really like Oysters, but snails are just a bit too far.

When I was 20 years old, the Marine Corps was sending me to Cameroon in West Africa to guard the US Embassy there. On the way, I had a day to kill in Paris. I took off by myself with my brand new camera and took pictures of everything and anything that I could. Then after it got dark outside, I went back the the Marine House, where the guys who guard the embassy in Paris live, and a few of us went out to eat. It was my first time overseas and I wanted to try snails.

The plate was a flat, round metal thing with a dozen little bowls around to hold a dozen snails. It really looked like a very weird clock. In the middle of the plate was a special fork for digging them out of their shells. There isn't much to them, but I ate everyone of them just to sat the I had done so.

I thought they were tough and chewy. The only real flavor that came through was that of garlic. What was really cool was sitting there and seeing the Arc D'Triumph down the road and watching the people walk by. That was much more fun then the snails!!!
