How stupid can I be?

It seems getting off to take a break is the leading cause of stupidity here, so i dont feel so bad for this one.

Only have had my tractor now for about 2 months. I was doing some dirt moving which required crossing my nicely manicured lawn when i felt the need for a break, so i parked the tractor in the lawn, lowered the FEL and box blade and took a few minutes to stretch out. When i got back on, i fired up the tractor, raised the FEL and threw her in high reverse. I thought i had left the parking brake on because it was moving very sluggishly through the grass, so i checked it and nope, wasnt on. Hmmmm..... Well, maybe i should give her some more revs. That made the tractor go a little faster, but something still wasnt right. It finally hit me when i looked in front of the tractor and noticed a nice 25' swath of missing grass right through the middle of my yard. DOH.... Forgot to raise the dang box blade.

When the wife asked me what happened to the yard, i just told her that there was a hump there that needed some leveling out. She said "I dont ever remember a hump there". I just laughed at her and said "Pfffttt, women!!!".
Tell her it's a new flower bed and will look nice when the flowers bloom!

I bought a brand new Chain saw from the local saw shop in the spring and the owner showed me the recommended things and how to do the chain and gas and what not. Well I didn't use it much that year until fall.

After a couple tanks of gas cutting wood for my father in law I go to tighten the chain and grab a screw driver and go to the spot beside the bar, and there is no screw head, just the end of a shaft. So I load up and go down to the local saw shop.

Lucky for me I didn't get all bent out of shape. I walked in and said that there was either a broken saw or a loose nut behind the steering wheel. He asked for me to explain and I showed him the missing screw head, to witch he replied that it had moved to the side, didn't anyone show me when I bought the saw. I thanked him, grabbed my saw and left my pride for repair

This one always makes me grin a bit. Back in college, I borrowed a friend's care to run an errand. Parking on campus was always tight, so I was delighted to see an open spot on my return. I backed in set the brake and got out. Funny thing, I heard voices from under the car. The reason the spot was open was that it was an open stairway to the basement rec room that I had fortunately centered while parking at nite. I quickly found another spot.

Ok,
Here's one, so you don't feel bad.
I performed my 50 hour service on my BX24 yesterday. Went over everything before to get a plan. Plan was, fuel filters first, air filter, engine oil and filter, hydraulic oil and filter, then axle gear oil last. Well I was up to the engine oil and drained it. I slid my collection pan over, so I could remove the oil filter and catch any oil with the pan. I had the cap style oil filter removers, you know, the type that use a 1/4" ratchet. Well, every time I tried the cap slipped on the filter. It(the filter) was on there good. Tried for a while and decided to take a ride to Autozone. Picked up an oil filter plier and went back home. Filter came right off. Great, right. Well I installed the new filter and started filling the engine. I got about half a quart in and got that oh, oh feeling. Anyone, anyone.
Yep, I forgot to put the drain plug back in the engine. Darn. I saw some nice clean oil coming out. Popped the plug in and everthing else went well.
Could I get by with telling people, it's a new way to flush the engine with fresh oil. Probably not.

DITTO; I have been servicing equipt. since a teenager on the farm some 45+ yrs now.
changing oil in my kioti just last week, got distracted by a neighbor, get back to it , proceeded to pour 2qts of SYNTHETIC$$ oil down the drain, forgot the drain plug.
So don't feel bad you got GOOD company

AKwelder reminded me of a chainsaw issue I had.
I had a really old saw I had used for years. I decided I would replace it when I started to clear our lot for our home. I had used the saw for several weekends but less than 6 months. Put in the case one day and next time I went to use it I could start it but the chain would not turn. I cut if off and tried it several times but same results, start but acted like it was binding. I am a weekend warrior and so I asked the wife to take it to the dealer to see if he could repair it by the following weekend. I explained to her what it was doing. She took it in and evidently did a great job explaining the problem. The dealer service technician had it repaired before she left. I asked what he had to do, 'Release the chain brake' she said. Man did I feel small. I had never had a saw with a chain brake and the thought never crossed my mind. I must have hit it putting the saw in the box. What a dummy! I am sure the tech got a good laugh.

I did the chain brake thing too. I only had to take it apart a couple times to figure t out!

Yep I also did the chain thing and it wasn't my saw. I was in the woods so only had a couple of squirrels laughing at me. Once i had it figured out I then proceeded to use it. such as when standing in allot of brush cutting. Ill cut and before walking ill slam it into lock till I'm on solid ground again. Its a good idea after all.
I guess I didn't mention the reason it was a Friends saw was because the handle on mine was bent. Tractor ran it over

Being the Mr Fixit Electronic Geek that I think I am. The microwave oven had quit working so I took it out to the garage to work on it. I have worked on them before so figured aww it's just the diode or something. The garage has a concrete floor. I set the oven down with the top off. Then put a glass a water in the chamber and fire it up while I have my knee's on the floor probing for loose connections with a screwdriver. There is about 4000 volts inside on the capacitor in those things when they are operating. I know this and should have thought about it. A buddy calls me while I am testing this oven. First thing I do is touch the capacitor with the metal screwdriver and get the Zap of my life because I have my knee's on the concrete. The zap made me spring backwards and let out a bad word! While I am flying backward I toss the phone down on the concrete breaking it...
I had to call my Buddy back and explain why I swore in his ear and slammed the phone down.. He lauged for 5 minutes.

I ended up making it to the fence about .02 microseconds before the 'horns' did.. phone went flying.. I probably let out a panic scream, and then threwmyself over the fence... lande don a thorn bush too!

A bit later I found my phone and called my friend back.. said he herd some loud breathing.. running.. a scream and a thud... we laughed about it later!

Now, you see, you can get away with that kind of stuff when you're young-good reflexes, plenty of speed. My problem is I'm getting older, reflexes suck and any time I try to move fast, I pull something. Ain't life grand?

After a (thankfully) minor knee and back injury in the past few years... I'm beginning to 'run out' of those 'panic run/jump' situations!

Fear and adrenaline can do great things for responses sometimes! Recovery time from aches and pains is getting longer for me though from over doing it on tree jobs......Might have to hire some young 20-30 year old whipper snapper....

I've used up all my friends on my farm.. they will come over and help sometimes.. but wear out fast.. they all have soft hands and are used to ait conditioning!

This is great....finally a thread where there's no name-calling, my-brand-is- better-than-your-brand, grown men (supposedly) arguing about insignificant "stuff". Can we make this a separate forum, called "my screw-ups" or "don't do this at home" or "Tim Taylor's tips" ???
I can't resist, I have to add my own saga. Hopefully it'll bring a chuckle as many of the other stories did to me.
So I'm mounting a backhoe on my CUT. Get the bracket all mounted (had done the same procedure before so was intimately familiar with the process) subframe bolted to the "hoe, now all I have left is the hydraulics. No problem running lines from power beyond, hook them up to the hoe, stand back and ready to enjoy the fruits of my labor with some joysticks.....move them all around, nothing. Re-check connections, every possible item I can think of, nothing. Talk to my buddy the dealer, he says check all hard lines, might be clogged with little blue plastic outlet protectors.....rip the whole valve assembly apart (whew), clean out every line, re-assemble, nothing. What the #%$?? Now I'm getting upset. Must've hooked up the hydraulic ports, switched them around, taken them off about 6 times. Nothing. Now the expletives are flying. Very upset, get on tractor to turn it around and load up the hoe to move it back to storage and try again some other day. Back out of the garage about 20 feet and wonder why this huge puddle of hydro fluid is following me......forgot to cap the lines. Lost at least half of the 32 quarts....what fun cleaning that up was! Reach under tractor again to undo
quick disconnects.....to find one was 3/4 of the way on......snug but not on enough to allow fluid to pass. DOOOPE!!!!!! Good waste of 1/2 day!!

Here's "ONE" of the stupid things I done in my life. In 1972 I bought my first new Harley.
I rode it home and rode it around for several days. One afternoon, my brother, my cousin and I were going to ride our bikes for a bit.
My NEW bike would not start. It was a kick start only Sporster and I kicked until I was about dead, then my brother did, then my cousin did and then we tied a rope to the handle bars and pulled it up and down the road with a pickup.
We finally gave up and loaded it in the back of the pickup and got ready to take it back to the Harley shop, 40 miles away.
I went in the house to take a leak and I heard the bike fire up.
I ran out side and my brother was on the bike in the back of the pickup, blipping the throttle. I asked what he did.

"I flipped this little switch on the handle bars that says "RUN" and "STOP" to run."

As I said, that's "ONE" of the stupid things I've done in my life.

Another time...

Oh never mind.
