for the record...i know what live PTO is.
...but i'm looking to buy an old ford, anything from an NAA (which would rarely have live pto from what i've read) up to the late 60's models, and i'm finding ads whereby the seller is indicating that they have live PTO. problem is, i'm going to have to drive a pretty good clip to see the tractor(s) and would like to know absolutely for sure that they do have live PTO. and it seems that some sellers seem to confuse this with live hydraulics.
so how do i know for sure if these tractors have live PTO, short of actually seeing and testing the tractor myself??? what questions should i ask? any particular pics to ask for? are there any special levers on these tractors ( i saw an ad on ebay for a jubilee with live pto and a "special lever" that was photographed on the left side of the transmission ).

and can someone confirm for me the easiest way to test for live PTO once i'm there looking at the tractor. i think i know how to do it, but would certainly appreciate some confirmation on this.

many thanks in advance.

by the way, if anybody knows of a good tractor that meets the above specs, please let me know. i'm in cincinnati, ohio.

I would suggest for you to check the NH/Ford website for transmission design and parts breakdown to see if that option is available for the tractor you're looking for? to say if that tractor has the option is another issue. There are two flavors of live PTO, dual clutch (live) or independent with separate PTO clutch or coupler. In either case you should be able to speed up and slow down and change direction (forward and backward) with continuous PTO rotation.

You are right, the NAA does not have live or independent PTO. Tractordata.com shows it as "live optional", but I've never seen one. I guess they could have had a two-stage clutch option, but ??? The PTO lever is on the side of the transmission case, but that doesn't make it live or independent.

If you were testing the PTO for live operation, I'd start the tractor and engage the PTO. Once the PTO is engaged, you should be able to put the tractor into gear and out of gear without affecting PTO operation, either by using a two-stage clutch or a completely independent lever.

As far as knowing beforehand, if it's a Ford or New Holland, you can look on the NH site under their parts catalog and pretty much figure out the PTO type as JC suggested, or look it up on Tractordata.com if you are lucky.

I'm not sure if other models are the same, but my 2000 live PTO has a different looking casting from the tranny PTO where the clutch rod enters the housing. I can take pictures of both if you wish.

How do you tell? you post the model number(s) and then we look it up on a chart.

Jin... there is an optional live pto upgrade for the N and NAA.. it is essentially a 2nd clutch that is installed in place of the pinion coupling tube between the back of the trans and the diffy. one version is mechanically lever engaged.. the other option is hydraulically engaged. IE.. you don't stomp on the foot clutch to stop moving.. but rather throw the live pto clutch to kill the drivetrain.. stomping the foot clutch kills the pto and the drivetrain.

to the original poster.. if you are looking at the 00/01 series which covers 55-62 then you want a model number with a 6 as the middle digit.. this will be a 2-stage clutch.. ie. 660/661 or 860/861 for the 4 wheeled wide front models. post 58 you can find SOS trannied tractors with independent pto.. middle digit is a 7 or 8.

pre 65 4 cyls models and post 65 3 cyl models.. you can post the model ID numbers.. etc.

There are NAA's that have Live PTO, I had one,
so keep them in mind, they are a good size
tractor, way better than the 8/9n.

The NAA live pto is a finagle.

The NAA only has a single stage clutch. the 'live pto' option was nothing more than a pinion clutch that was installed in place of the couple tube that ran from the back of the trans to the R&P. If you needed the pto to keep turning but wanted the drive train to stop, you threw the hand clutch. it killed the R&P but kept the pto going.

if you stepped on the foot clutch.. everything stopped.

2 options were available.. a mechanical lever operate one that would fit the 8n or naa.. and a hyd one that fit the NAA.. the hyd one used a small pump that mounted to the tach drive portion on the front of the engine mounted hyd pump.

I am a repair shop, and have a naa with independent pto here, there is a small pump connected between the main pump and the tach cable and an extra lever for the pto control. They do exist.

No one said they didn't.. they are just a pinion clutch and rare as hens teeth.
