I like that because it retains a pin slot for a small wagon that you usually use on lawn tractors without having to remove the ball to us it. That is SLICK!

If you have an old tow ball I believe they are threaded into the ball, remove and use a bushing. I havent tried this, my light weight equipment has pins.

Mike the only problem I have with doing that is the fact there is a flange built into the mounting area and you'd lose that and some support for the thin metal present there.

Then maybe this tractor isn't suitable for towing anything that needs a 2" ball ????

I have a small mesh-bed utility trailer I want to move from part of the yard to another and it has a 2" receiver. I can push it by myself as it is that light but quite the pain. I could hook it up to my diesel truck but quite often this time of year the yard is very soft. I'm not wanting to pull anything heavy. It is just for convenience.
Golly Mike you mean it won't pull my 32ft toyhauler.....................

diesel nut, I appologize for seemingly dissing your tractor, not my intent. I wasn't aware that newer lawn tractors are so lightly built that one couldn't increase a 1/2" hole to 3/4" without loss of integrity. Your intended use is what I would have expected. MikeD74T

Top and bottom of mounting area. If you drill it out you will lose what structural strength is there from that flange and all the pulling force will be born on relatively thin metal. Hope this helps make my point about drilling it out.
Of course you could drill and use washers on either side and hope it gets tight enough that the force is on the washers and not the mount area. But sooner or later the pulling on it will get to the mount.
