Well gents.... the moment you have all been waiting for.
I just pulled the trigger on a 2009 F150 XLT supercrew with a 6.5' bed.
Today was the second time I went to test drive the Ford. I took my wife with me. Originally I was planning to wait until the fall or winter of this year but for a few reasons I decided to go ahead and do it.
1. Ford has a $6000 rebate on right now which apparently is going away on April 1st. This sorta pushed me to pull the trigger a bit sooner than I would have otherwise. If they get a better deal on April 1st then I get the better deal of the two whatever it is. In addition I get the Ford XPlan pricing through work. It worked out to 3% over invoice without any haggling. I saved over $9k off sticker on the truck. Seemed like a heck of a deal and I will bet it is a result of the fact that sales have been so bad.
2. I've spent some time looking for a used truck. Something 2006 or newer and really have not found any decent deals. I knew if I bought used I would look for a private sale and most private sellers seem to what too much money for their trucks compared to what I can get with the rebate and the XPlan pricing.
3. After pouring through the options I decided that I wanted something specific. This time around I did not want the top of the line vehicle with leather that I have bought in the past. However I did want things like the rearview camera, Ford Sync, backup sensors etc. All that on a 6.5' bed truck when most of the trucks on the lot are 5.5' and generally tend to lack those features on the lower/mid end model that I bought. So it is going to have to be factory ordered - which I am perfectly fine with. It is a new model so I am happy to get it from one of their later production runs. If I had waited till the fall I was concerned that I would not be able to get what I wanted.
4. My wife vetoed the option of getting a work truck and a commute car. So I was going to have to get something that I would be happy commuting in. I think that the 2009 is getting pretty good reviews wrt. MPG with the 6 speed transmission from the Expedition. I did bite the bullet and get the 5.4 L engine so fuel efficiency won't be as good as I could have gotten with the smaller engine but my understanding is that the GMC Sierra and the 2009 F150 are leading the class in fuel efficiency regardless.
5. I felt good giving one of the big three my business this time around. I've driven Hondas for the last decade. It seems to me that out of the big 3, Ford has taken the biggest leaps forward in design of their vehicles and whether or not you believe it Consumer Reports claims that across the board they have seen Ford make a leap in reliability.
6. As silly as it seems, I thought that by moving my purchase foward a bit, since I can afford it, I would do whatever bit I could to help the economy along

- not to mention get a kicking deal with the rebate!
Overall, I am quite happy with the decision. The dealership was very good and treated me very well. I have to head down tomorrow to finish the paper work as they were practically shutdown by the time we finally made our decision and paid the deposit.
I better get prepared for the hard sell on extended warranty and other accessories that the business manager always does

I'm tempted to get the extended powertrain warranty at least since the transmission is somewhat new. The 5.4 L Tritron has been around a while and I expect that the bugs with it have been worked out.
