Is this an '09 model? If not, then the only way to refill it is through the same hole it was drained from. That might require removing the rear end.
There are others with first-hand experience that will chim in soon, I'm sure. Just let us know what year your tractor is, and whether it's an SLT1554 or GT1554.

How did he drain it? My understanding was that they are sealed units and could only be drained through a vent hole on top.

Hey CCinCt,theres a drain plug right below the oil filter on the left side of the engine.I'm assuming that it is tranny fluid because of the red color.The handbook says it sealed but a friend of mine says they have a drain plug there in case they have to work on it.

No, that's not the transmission fluid. Not sure why it's red, but I'd guess that shipping oil (break-in oil) may have additives that make it a different color.

Okay... first off, since you admitted to not being mechanically inclined.. what makes you think the transmission was drained and not the engine oil? Don't go by color alone... they add a fluorescent dye to the engine oil to make leak detection easier... just because it's red or pink doesn't mean it's transmission fluid. Pull the oil dipstick and see if there is anything on it.
Secondly, the '08 model year has a transmission filter on the lefthand side (as you sit) on the rear transaxle... it's under a metal protective cover... if I was to drain or add I'd do it though the filter and tilt the tractor to facilitate draining/filling. Just measure the amount the was drained (probably around 70 ounces, if it's bone dry) and replace it with the same amount (+/-) of a fully synthetic (like Mobil-1) 20W 50 engine oil.
There is no drain/fill plug on the transaxle that comes with the GT1554 model... the only exception to this is if you had the tractor serviced and they replaced it with a unit with a drain plug.
