SAE90 Transmission Gear Oil

Soundguy,

I have a Jinma 224 and have bought 5 gallons of the walmart/Sam's club UTF transmission/hydraulic fluid. Do I have yellow metal and should this fluid be safe in my hydraulic and drive train systems?

UTF fluid should be fine.. in fact.. I believe I remember seeing that walmart utf fluid even mentioned yellow metal safety.. I just used about 48 qts of it on my last oil change.. etc.

Question here...maybe I can learn something?
Can someone explain exactly how GL5 can harm "yellow metal"?
-Is yellow metal bronze or brass?
-What does it do to it?
-What are the effects?
Thanks,

I'm not chem-eng.. but hit the penziolwebsite.. lookup gearplus lubes.. they are one of many that are yellowmetal safe.. read the pdf fopr more info.

As far as I know it is a sulfer compound issue.. not sure about phosphorous??? The higher the gl rating.. the higher the amount of addative..

I was looking at older threads on gear oil, I found this about the yellow metal from the Penz site. They describe yellow metal as copper and/or brass.

Current API specs are API 1, 4, 5 and MT1.

API 1 is primarily used in manual transmissions used in mild conditions and are not suitable for transmissions found in most cars.

API 4 is intended for axles with sprial bevel gears operating under moderate to severe conditions of speed and load or axles with hypoid gears under moderate loads. This oil due to it's additive package is safe for use with yellow metals (brass, bronze, copper). It is used in most synchronized transmissions.

API 5 is indended for gears, particularly hypoid gears in axles operating in under various combinations of high speed/shock load and low speed/high torque conditions. This gear oil is found in most rear axles and non synchronized transmissions.

MT1 is used in non synchronized manual transmissions in buses and heavy trucks. Basically a super heavy duty API 5 type gear oil.

There are manufacturers that make multi spec oils that meet both API 4, 5 and MT1. They are usually higher end lube makers that use higher cost additives that do not have the corrosive effect on yellow metals as are found in the majority of API 5 and MT1 gear oils. API 1 is not found alot anymore as most equipment manufacturers specify either API 4 or 5.

RE gear and transmission lube and GL1 vs GL5 vs mineral oil: I have a 49 Farmall Super A and after reading this thread I looked in vain for GL1 at local stores. NAPA still does have it by special order, in 5 gallon buckets only, at $115. So the NAPA guy called Valvoline which makes all NAPA oils. The tech there said that early GL5 gear oils had sulfur as an additive, which did indeed corrode yellow metals. However all new versions of Valvoline GL5 gear oils, including those made for NAPA, now contain "non active sulfate" which should be compatible with any yellow metals. So that's what I'm going to do. The one caveat is that these new oils are not compatible with old mineral oils like GL1, so you must drain the old lubes and convert to the new and then stick with the new. If anyone has additional information regarding this please post.

I think napa is pulling your leg.. unless you live in some far begotten place like alaska..

65-205 is a 5g pail of 90wgl1.. and is about 35$ here in florida
65-201 is the 2g pail of the same.. and preiced by volume simialr to the 5g pail.

walmart sells an 80w90 gl5 as well as 85/140 oil that claims to be yellow metal safe

penzoil and castrol both sell a yellow metal safe 80w90 or 75 w 90 gear oil.

walmart 5g oils are about 48$ here in florida.

Thanks Soundguy. The part numbers are helpful. Not all NAPA's are created equal. This guy really didn't know and defaulted to the Valvoline tech.

Followup on SOundguy's NAPA part numbers: Five and two gallon quantities of 90w GL1 are available through my NAPA, and they actually had the 2 gallon in stock. So my NAPA guy was operating on ignorance. Price here for the 2 gallon was $42.95, a far cry from the price SG quoted. But then again, all NAPA's are not created equal.
