Arrow, some good points about their pricing...Not everyone can or will pay 40K-50K ( B-4 finance charges) for a new diesel truck.... Try to trade that truck or sell it in 10 yrs ( If it will last that long b- 4 major repairs )..What Will it be worth 10K ?? If that much

A valid point. If I were spending 45K on a p.u., I'd want to last a lifetime. For a struggling car company, there is just no large isolation consumers sale point to justify a 45K p.u. and yet that was one of the head liners at a manufactuers auto show I worked back in January. I saw that truck and said to myself, "This company is doomed". The size of yesteryears full size pu was the size of the current day Dakota. They got so large not to carry more as they were selling them mostly to homeownwers and not contractors. No they got so large was because they played the psychological game that a bigger truck meant a bigger manhood. Match the pu to a Kenworth size vehicle and you'd sell trucks. they were correct but now our egos became less important and reality showed up in town for which they had no answer. Even Dakotas are 35 K. All silly stuff enough to sink a car company. They are also going to have to cut advertising cost. One night I counted 54 car commercials from 7 pm to 10 pm. If you build good , pertinent cars where pertinent is the key word here, you don't have to feel as if you need to ram your product down people's throats with excess, annoying commercials to make sales, The pertinency with realistic pricing will sell cars for you.

It depends on the time slot and the contractual agreement between the company and the net work. Most of the auto companies buy in bulk slots that can run up to 2 Mil for just the slots. Production costs are another biggie. They can run to $350 K for a complicated 1 minute commercial. Those elaborate p.u. ones where the trucks miss swinging girders and such are alleged to run close to a million. Gm's recent figure accounted to $535 mil for the year which contrasts to Chrysler's $181 mil. Toyota spent $291 mil. There are not too many car commercials that would actually make you want to buy a car. Two of the more famous and productive ones were the Mitsubishi commercial where the gal was bopping to the music while her skirt rode high up her leg as she sat in the seat swaying to the music. They sold a ton of Eclipses with that one. The most famous one of recent vintage was of the 2 dumb brothers racing the hemi pu next to them. That put Dodge trucks on the map even more so than when Chrysler put the Cummins in. Shows you where we're at as a species doesn't it. It is also why building a good car is not enough. There are still too many people who watch reality shows. In this country, perception always seems to win out over substance.

If made in china meant saving the big3, would you buy a chinese made vehicle?

From what ive been reading the UAW and GM are on the verge of agreeing to allow the import and sale of chinese vehicles in NA, starting in 2011.

I feel this is the beginning of a slippery slope.Im sure if GM is successful the others will follow.

Personally i would NOT buy a made in china vehicle, same as i wont buy tools made there. All you have to do is check out the tests on youtube, no way id put my kids in that.

Just heard on my local news that a large chevy/dodge dealership ( about 50 miles from me) will be closed. The woman that owns the dealership took it over from her father some years back.. I think it has been in business for a long time. Said 75-100 workers will be out of work. Dodge dealership about 5 miles from me closed last week

I believe this is a veiled threat or a sort of "grandstanding" to send a message to the unions that if they don't back off on their demands, GM will just import & rebadge cars from China. Then maybe the unions will back off some.

Everything else is made in China now anyway. If someone wants to buy a Chinese car, who cares? People buy Chinese tractors, TV's, etc and have been doing so for years.

Buyer beware I say, but I'll never buy one. I go out of my way to buy American for new purchases.

I dont think its a veiled threat. Just like the TV, tool and other manufacturers before them, GM sees big profit potential by using chinese manufacturing. Its only natural that they talk about moving to take advantage of it. No employee benefits and lax environmental standards... Its a win-win for them. However, i think it wont fly with the consumer...I hope.

What bothers me is Canadian and American tax dollars went to these companies to keep people employed, and now they're looking at shipping these jobs overseas? That ain't right.

And then, theres the recent development that Chrysler is trying to sidestep the (IMHO reasonable) cap on executive salaries, by saying that their top executives are now Fiat employees?? Thats the thanks that taxpayers, employees and dealership owners get for all their sacrifices?

Sounds like upper management in all these companies are still as crooked as ever.

It's interesting how there are so many "underpaid" executives at these bankrupt companies.

So true... I think the 500K cap was more than reasonable considering the financial state the companies are in. Id go as far as saying 500k is reasonable even in good times. High pay doesnt equal good leadership.... Just look at the quality of leadership that the previous high paid management gave.

Using technicalities to side step the governments wishes that executive compensation be reeled in is slimy at best.
