Who do you let borrow your trailer?

BTW, my brother-in-law is not a friend. Ha!!

I just realized that nearly everyone talks about friends and relatives in such a way that implies two separate groups of people.

My simple solution - I intentionally "mis-wire" (i.e. switch brake and turn signal wires in the plugs) all my trailers. The explanation that my trailers are not plug compatible with other's vehicles is honest.

But:
1) When asked, I will nearly always volunteer time and vehicles (with me as driver) at the cost of fuel

2) For those times I need to rent a trailer (u-haul, or rental center) I have a simple adapter that allows use of standard wired trailers on my vehicle.

Neither a lender or borrower be - but be a friend and offer to go along ad help.

No one, keep a stack of the rental place's cards in my truck and flip them one, while saying I wouldnt want you responsible if something went wrong with my trialer, these guys are cheep and easy to work with.

short story as to why,
guy borrows a trailer to pick up a truck with a blown engine for his boy, puts the truck on the trailer backwards, stated swayin, fliped his new truck, tossed the truck with the blown engine, turned it into scap and turned the trailer into spagetti.
I worked with the poor guy for years all he had to do was ask for my help and I would have gone and got it for him, poor guy. He got the trailer from his neighbor, it was 2 weeks old. uggggg

I also bought my trailers under my business name and you need to have DOT numbers. I have DOT on my truck so hardly anyone would be legally qualified to pull it.

I borrowed a friends trailer and carried a light load on it (2000 lb on a 14000 lb rated trailer) and the next day he put his mini excavator on it and an axle broke right off.

I felt terrible but I know I didn't break it. What are the odds. I have to do some work on it from damage he has caused to pay back the favor.

Just loaned my PU truck and trailer to a friend at work who needed to pick up a used JD tractor in upstate NY (we live in Southern Maryland). The trailer I would loan, but when he hit me up for the use of my truck to pull it, I felt I had to go along. So just Saturday we spent all day, driving to NY, picking up the JD and returning. No damage to the truck or trailer, and a lot of good friend bonding. I was sick with a cold at the time, so he had to do the driving, but I was glad to help.

Feels good to help a friend.
