You might also try contacting the fish & game department & tell them You beleive You may have poachers in that area . There more helpfull then any Sheriff or other law enforcment in rural areas. at least around here . Bob

May of the new game cameras are infrared. Will take a picture with little or no light where the target is recognizable.

Dear Sir
Now that I am a property owner I see things different, I was one the the kids that rode across property but I never caused damage. If you were to bury a 2x4 lumber board with nails driven through it and covered in leaves you can flatten a lots of tires, just count how many you bury.

Thats about as bad as digging a hole & covering it with Plywood . If You do anything where someone could get hurt You wont be a property owner very long IMO .

Some Areas You even have to be carefull on the signs you post . I,ve actually had to remove some signs I posted Because they were found to be offensive or threatning . The ones that were griping about it were trespassing to even be able to read the signs Which were posted 1/4 mile from the closest road .

The officials that asked Me to take them down were very polite & explained in detail Why I would be better off taking them down . & also said they would keep an eye on the entrance to our property . They Showed Respect for Me, so I did the same in return & haven,t had any problems for several years .

Its a shame things are that way these days But sadlly they are . Trespassers have more rights then landowners .

Most of my posts are cedar and frequently the center is a bit hollow -- after having a few sawn off I now put an old t post in the middle out of sight and out of mind. I have had a few more sawn -- but only to the t post:rolleyes:
Sounds like you need to post it with "access only with landowners permission " signs. It is amazing how people who want access will respect and police those who just drop in:p

We have four different properties and all have the same problem. As much as I like the clandestine solutions people post on the inter-net they really are not practical if you are at all concerned about liabilities. Most everywhere has a law against setting traps or shooting someone.

The most effective way, though not fool proof, we have found are gates like the forest service or lumber companies use that have steel posts, concrete filled with recessed locks. Once installed we bring in a dozer and build a berm/ditch systems so they can not be ridden around. Doesn't stop all the ATV's and I am sure some properties of your size could have endless access points.

Most of our issue is with deer hunters. In our state you can provide the game warden with a list of authorized hunters and provide them with an access key which allows them to patrol and arrest without question.

Sizzami, when you say the property is open to hunting what exactly do you mean. If you mean it is open to the public in general you will never solve the problem in IMO. Down here in the south things tend to work by word of mouth. If you use the game warden and law enforcement to stop one or two unauthorized users your problem will be reduced by 75%. Most likely though, it will never be stopped completely, which is what I have come to expect.

I THINK that in VT, land that isn't posted is open to hunting to anyone. Basically like a public hunting area. I still can't wrap my mind around such a foolish thing, but that's the way it works.

In my former job I heard from an Attorney who was suing because his client had driven past no trespassing signs on his ATV and then hit a chain that was used as a gate (from which hung another no trespassing sign) across a private road and gotten hurt.

Moral of the story -- don't do anything to keep people out that could injure them. I could see someone winning a case saying they have a right to chain their drive but if you start setting man traps that would be a hard case to win.

You could play the game that way too... get your camera or whatever surveilance equipment you need and then sue for replacement of the fence post, re-planting grass, environmental damage, emontional trauma, lack of consortium, or whatever other gimmic you can come up with. Fight fire with fire.

I am just going to put in my little plug here that it's frustrating when the crooks seem to have more rights than the victims.
