keeping out idiots

I don't yet live anywhere near my properties. They are forest lands. I use heavily armed men on ATV's during and around the hunting seasons. They pay the taxes on my land, post it for no trespassing and remove excess game.
They also put up gates.
It's called "hunting clubs".

I view it as either have them pay me a little or I would pay a lot for fencing, gate maintenance, etc. and still the "locals" would do whatever they wanted.

In my area of NE MS it seems almost all the land is under the "control" of one or another hunting club. Similar to gangs protecting their turf in the inner cities.

As suggested earlier, do like the forrestry management companies do. Set steel posts in concrete with steel gate tubes such that an ATV can't get past/under the gate. Using enough steel and concrete that they cannot be easilly ripped out or pushed over. Paint them bright and hang reflectors and no tresspassing signs on the fence so there is no missing them and accidently colliding with the gate. On either side of the gate, backhoe trenches piling the dirt from the excavation work up on either side of the trench("tank traps") These are placed so that there is no place to drive an ATV or truck around the gate, at least not without the use of a loader to fill in the trench and get rid of the mounds. It of course only works if there are natural obstacles such as trees or terrain near the gate to trench to. Open ground, you are back to fencing which is usually easilly cut or crushed.

The newer game cameras don't make a sound or flash and can save many nice high res pics digitally. Ideally you want it well hidden down at such an angle that liscence plates captured in the photos can be read. These pics may or may not get you some assist from the local law at deterring these people in the future. Be sure that there is some easilly identified feature from your property in the pic so it clearly shows that they are on your land. "Officer, that is my gate, which is inside the property line, seen clearly in the picture behind their truck" "Here is a picture of just the gate from a better angle showing the fence also"

I wish you luck.

Most everywhere has a law against setting traps or shooting someone.

MarkV

There is no law against set legitamite traps for animals, it's called "trappin" in Texas and the state sells a license for it. Just place them where "animals" might cross through your property. As far as shooting someone, if you are on your own property and you encounter someone with a gun, I hope you can decide quick enough if your life or the life of your kid is worth more than theirs. "Officer, I was in fear for my life and the life of my child..." If you don't have a concealed carry license, get one and educate yourself about the laws and rights that are afforded to protect you as a fine citizen of this great country.

Instead of posting a 'No Trespassing' sign, try posting an 'Access by permit ONLY' sign. That way you can charge a $500 access charge, and if you catch them without paying the fee, you could take them to court for not paying the fee and demand payment. The court will at least know what the minumin damages might be then.

it said DANGEROUS AREA KEEP OUT

I keep No trespassing signs and video surrvelience signs posted at my house in the city. They're at the gates going into the back yard. It's let me call the cops on kids leaving gates open after they've gotten balls they threw over the fence and let my dogs out.

Why do you need a concealed carry license on your own land?

Open carry. Heck, mount tripods and set T&E.

You don't, I'm just trying to get people in the frame of mind that it is o.k. to defend themselves not matter what the situation. It just seemed to me the way this thread was going that some are afraid to offend the public with signs and that is a little scary. Put windage flags on your place every hundred yards, they'll get the picture.

Dear Sir
Now that I am a property owner I see things different, I was one the the kids that rode across property but I never caused damage. If you were to bury a 2x4 lumber board with nails driven through it and covered in leaves you can flatten a lots of tires, just count how many you bury.
Craig Clayton

You can't keep out idiots but you can slow them down. A couple of three Pound coffee cans of roofing nails, and a couple of lost bales of barb wire . Placed in the path of an ATV will slow them down a lot when they have to replace all the tires they won't be back. I have no use for some one that will ride an ATV on someone elses property without first getting an OK. They deserve any thing they get. If my Grandfather was living they would get shot. And I do see something wrong with riding on someone property without an OK to do so it's called Trespassing. Even if it isn't fenced or have No Trespassing signs. And a vilotaion of that persons property.

If you start putting out roofing nails, how long before they return the favor?

Game camera prices have come down to the point that a game camera sounds a lot cheaper than the expense to put up a strong gate and the rest. There's probably some way to turn off the flash anyway.

BFD.. So you get a picture of the people and maybe a plate, I really doubt the police are going to take it too serious.
I really like the idea of building the big pit. But I'm afraid some lawyer would come along an sue me for protecting MY property. If we could only elect Ted as Prez for a term or two. There would be a lot of correctional officers out of work real fast.
