Now to find a buyer for my old version small guard, still new-in-box.

Great thread! I am now 2 years in with my BX, all work in the woods, and I have been running unprotected the whole time with no issues.

But I am always concerned and mindful of the risk. I have seen the fab work on here and the Bro-tek - and really like the idea - but have always worried about the heat issue. My land is all steep slopes, so the HST is always taxed. Several times I have been ready to order the Bro-Tek, but then second guess.

And the Kubota version just doesn't seem to provide much protection compared to the others.

I have been thinking of fabbing something (for which I have no skill) using expanded metal in the skid plate design - figured it would provide good protection for all but the smallest twigs and still provide for air flow. I figure i am missing something obvious since it has been done here yet....:D

My take is simple. Cannot really compare Apples and Oranges. One is a skid plate, full body armor and the other is an HST fan protector. Kubota didn't make a skid plate and isn't passing it off as such.

I just ordered the "NEW" longer fan protector from Toreku in Ayer Mass with the part number K2681-21212. They said about 10 days to to weeks. Cost was $41.91 including shiping to me.

I agree with the statements that it looks like a good fan protector. Further, I agree that it is inadequate protection for the filter (if you ever challenge either.) I disagree with the air flow concerns. I don't see any on any of the designs in this entire thread. The air flow should be quite sufficient in all cases. Most times, designers will provide shrouds to guide the air for maximum fan efficiency if it is at all marginal.

If you (collectively/generically) think the air flow were that marginal, you would be better off hosing all the film, dust, dirt, etc. off of the pump housing directly behind the fan than worrying about it.

The transmission housing does most of the cooling for the transmission at large, but that specific area needs concentrated cooling. The reason is although some oil creeps out of that area, and must be topped up by the hydraulic pump, MOSTLY that oil runs in a tight little circle. The circle is out of the pump pistons into the motor pistons, out of the motor pistons into the pump pistons. There is some minor friction, but mostly, the heat is caused by leakage around the piston rings of both the pump and the motor. It is a beautiful setup, really.
