custom hose cost

I guess I'm blessed with a decent hydraulic hose shop here in town. Farmers Hose Supply. I just bring in the old hose and they make a new one up just like it in about 5 minutes while you wait. If I was buying a bunch of hoses I could probably get it a little cheaper online, but they are generally within 10 or 20 percent of an online shop and it is worth it to just bring it in and walk out with it.

Just took one in today. 3/8" - 42" long. MPT fitting on one end and a 3/8" to 1/2" compresson fitting on the other end. It was $31.44. $3.48/ft + $5.11 for the 3/8" MPT and $14.15 for the 3/8" to 1/2" 90 compression fitting. I thought that was kind of high (usually it is around $20 - $25 for a 4' - 6' hose) but the reducing fitting was pretty high. I didn't even notice it was a reducing fitting when I took it in! ;)

Today I just paid $76.00 for a 3/8 hose 46" long with a straight Jic fitting on one end and a 45 degree fitting on the other. I know it was steep!!! I did not question it or challenge it because I was in the middle of a job when the hose let go and really needed to get the backhoe back in operation. I wish that I could charge that much to my customers and get away with it.

I know if I had time I could have gotten away with quite a bit less. But in the long run I am back in business and all is well.

Believe it or not, the big part of this cost was the 45 crimp fitting. Next time, see if you can get away with a straight crimp fitting and buy a 45 street fitting.

I have been getting my hoses for at work and at home from the same auto parts strore for about 15yrs. Some times I would wonder about the price being a little high but didn't question it. Last month the auto parts store closed the doors. The next closest place to get hoses made is 15 miles away. If you have a truck loaded with concrete and blow a hose you don't have a extra 1/2hr to go get a hose made. I ended up buying all the equiptment for making hoses from the auto parts store for at work. There were alot of fittings left but were not many of the ones I use most (JIC). I about had a heart attack when I got the bill for the replacement fitting and hose I needed. After seeing how much the fittings and hose costs I decided that the auto parts store had been verry good to me when making my hoses. Most people don't realize how much investment it takes to make hyd. hoses and try to stock all the right fitting. I was one of those people.

I have a place local to me within 4 miles that make up Hyd. hoses, I got a bit of surprize myself when I was given the bill for 37.50 for 1 16" section,
the real blow was the Qds cost 18.00 each,
and all this just to make a loop,

Been watching this thread.
In my experience my best priced hoses are found as Surplus Center.
Local hoses are (MUCH) more.
I am somewhat experienced, I am a hobby-type, certainly no pro at hydraulics.

That said, I just completed a totally custom power steering, full hydraulic, adjustable priority valve. I needed a combination of JIC, SAE and NPT ends. Every hose had different fittings on opposite ends.
So... One at a time I measured each hose (it took 7), noted the required fitting on each end, went to town, had the local NAPA dealer make it up, and paid dearly for the custom, exact length perfect fit. And fit it did! Then I moved on to the next hose. This one-at-a-time process would have taken weeks to complete via mail order.

I was willing to pay 30-45 dollars for each exact fit hose and have them hand in just a half hour.
Mail order, while cheaper, takes much longer, and fit not as much a sure thing.

My next project is much easier to plan, and those hoses are coming UPS from Surplus Center.

What is the loop in the picture for?

This line was cut out in order to connect the flow of Hydraulic fluid to the FEL, and when the FEL is not in use or rather removed from the tractor the Loop has to be put in to bridge the line back together, I could have made a straight line connection but I wanted to install Quick connect couplers for easy quick connection of the FEL,

I would love for you guys to take out a bank loan, purchase thousands in equipment and supplies, and start making hoses. I did. I can honestly say that you guys don't have a clue. I was called a crook for what I charged, by some. Funny, I didn't make enough to stay in business. Contractors would pull up to my shop with their new 1 ton 4 door dually diesel pick-ups and complain about my prices as I drive away in my 5 year old strippo Ford Ranger.
By the time I paid the rent, my suppliers, telephone, electric, accountant, advertising, and worst, biggest bill of all, the government, there wasn't enough left for me to support my family. I closed the doors and went back to work.

quite understandable, the large manufacture is cause for high cost, and if shipped from overseas then even more high cost, by the time the product reaches the merchants/reatailers and he ads his 5% for 10 minutes work,
us consumers really feel the crunch, Yes a lot of us overlook the overhead cost in owning and running a business, but I think some places over price their products do to the lack of sales, actually more now then ever I am seeing things go up and up simply because the retailers are trying to make up for the loss of sales, and again it starts in the manufactures whenh there sales go down the demand of products or down so they have to increase cost,
They can call it what they want, their excuses are things like shipping, delivery, fuel cost, insurance rate, etc, but in order to stay in business and have a good customer/business relationship you have to absorb some of these cost, and when you can do this you will have return customers, not folks walking out the door feeling as though they have been ripped back,
I know! I've run my business for over 30 years and have learned to absorb;)
