" Just keep in mind how many of these vehicles there are out there and what would you do if you saw one coming at you head on." >

You make a real good point, there are sooooo many of these cars out there it will be like playing Russian Roulette wondering if one of them is going to accelerate into you or a family member.

This is the most significant recall I have ever heard of and if Toyota has know about this since 2000 as some have reported this could be the end for them...but in the meantime be careful out there..If I had one of them I would park it !

The Toyota quality issues appear to be growing even in Japan. It's sad to see a company that has had a reputation for quality lose it like this.

To put things in perspective, the gas pedal risk is probably one of the least risks you face when you get behind the wheel unless you have had the problem already.

Ken

That may be true but it's one that should be corrected immediately by Toyota and so far they seem to be letting it lag.

I am seriously beginning to think this is a
witch-hunt by the Feds to help US automakers
regain some market share. EVERY manufacturer
has had recalls, millions of cars, and never have
they come out and said "stop driving your cars".
sounds fishy to me

And now the Fed recants his statement,
wow

At the risk of sounding like a conspiricy theorist think about this.

Japan holds a tremendous amout of US debt. Mr. Toyoda himself probably holds a lot of it. He also holds sway with the Japanese government and business circles.

LaHood makes a comment that he believes is in the interest of American public safety but actually costs Totota billions.

The White House is called by Japan and reminded of the US debt burden held by the Japanese.

The White House calls LaHood and tells him to 'sit down and shut up'.

Now, who's interests are being served?

The majority of the recall is for a sticking accelerator not "sudden acceleration" ---- So when you run you mother in law into the garage door you will have to be going fast enough already to claim that the brakes just could not slow it down:D:D:D
Having been in an accident with fatalities in the last two years and having been driving a Toyota at the time, I bought the same one again.
When driving, I am far more concerned about driver inattention than a sticky throttle pedal.
As for Toyota being able to "muzzle" LaHood on the basis of hollding national debt -- in that case there should never be a recall of any Chinese product:rolleyes:

I agree - Your scenario is not far fetched ! and think about it Japan and Toyota also know the US Govt. is the largest shareholder of GM who stands to benefit handsomely from this as do other bailed out automakers..The case could be made that LaHood made is statement to enrich GM, a US govt. holding. and then as you say, when it hit the fan he was told to shut up !

I still say if I owned one I'd park it and I will be on the lookout when driving as much as possible for speeding Toyotas..

(I think it was a Texas Patrolman and family that was killed) had enough experience with vehicles to attempt some action to dis-able the vehicle.

It was a CHP officer in San Diego.

I have 3 Toyotas and one is drive-by-wire (electronic throttle control).
I am not concerned. The brakes can easily overcome any engine, and
they are mechanical/hydraulic.

What I don't get is how the cell phone caller in the San Diego tragedy stated
that the car had no brakes, and there was time for a call, but not time
to shift into neutral. And why the brakes would not work.

Anyway, remember the unintended accelleration problems that plagued
Audi 5000s back in the early 80s? No technical problem was ever found.

When I was (much) younger we had a '58 Chev sedan that was our 'school car'. the engine was worn out to the point of not being worth rebuilding. We found a 292 from a pickup in not bad shape, the pickup had been refreshed with a small V8. The motor mounts didn't match up but everything else did. Needless to say the engine moved around a bit when you stepped very hard on the gas pedal. The first time it locked the throttle open was a bit of a surprise and it probably took me 3-4 seconds to decide what to do about that, shut off the key. The odd time it happened after that the reaction was much faster.
Getting to the point, I have an 08 Tundra and am not very worried about the throttle sticking or being slow to release. I'm pretty sure I can still get my hand on the key and shut that thing off before much time passes or my speed increase very much. Up until reading this thread I hadn't heard anything about any of them going WOT. Are any of those reports first hand or undocumented rumours?
