I recently purchased a YM1500D from a private party, and he didn't know the function of some of the levers, specifically the PTO and the one directly below it. Also, the PTO always spins when the clutch is out, and I haven't had any success shifting it into neutral (or any position other than 1). Is there some trick to it? I can move the lever below the PTO lever, but couldn't really tell what its function is. Finally, there is a note on the inside of the right fender (in cryptic "english") that says something about creeper. Can anybody give me a rundown of these features?
Thanks!

There shouldn't be any trick to the PTO. Just hold the clutch in, and shift. In fact with no load you should be able to shift it from engaged to neutral without the clutch pushed in. (But not recommended). I assume there is no load - mower, tiller, etc, on it.

The lever in front of the pto lever is to engage the front axle (4x4) by pushing that lever forward. Is that what you mean?

The hi/lo range lever sticks out the right side of the transmission. Low range is forward, down. Could this be what that 'creep' means?

If you could post some pictures, you will likely get a lot of advice.

And Welcome!

Thanks for the info. I thought the lever under the PTO might possibly be 4wd, but wasn't sure which position engaged the front. Hopefully somebody will give me an idea what to look at to fix the PTO. I will try to take some more pictures tomorrow.

I guess this is the 4wd lever?

Is this the valve that should be open for the three point hitch?

Thanks!

I guess I'll have to figure out how to add the pictures inline.

To access the creep gear, there is a small metal pin type knob beside the gear shifter, you have to pull that up to shift into the creep gear

The pto lever should shift from 1, (down), to neutral then 2, 3, etc. If it won't go, only onsite troubleshooting can fix it. Some will spin some, even in neutral, with no load applied. There are several ways that the creep gear is locked out, including a bolt and bracket. Not something you would want to use anyway.

I am attaching a picture of the label about creep speed--is this just referring to the H-L range?

Also, regarding the PTO, The first picture shows the forwardmost position of the lever. In that positon, it will go up and down about 3/16", but will not turn forward more in either up or down position. The second shows the position to which the lever will turn freely. It can then be rotated to straight back, but feels like there is a slight drag like a detent or something to position it to the rearmost positon. Does this sound like there is an issue with the PTO shift forks, or is there a simpler problem that I am missing?

Thanks

My mistake, front to rear, not up and down. If the lever moves front to rear but no gear change probably a broken pin inside, Shafts 41 & 43 should shift to change gears. The creeper notice looks to be a Vietnamese translation.

The 4wd lever moves rearward to engage the front axle. This is apparently backwards from some others. This is the second time I have seen someone get it wrong on the web.

First gear in the PTO is straight back. With the tach at about 2000 RPM the PTO speed is about 540 rpm, right for standard attachments. Second is forward and third is down and forward. Third is 1097 at 2200 rpm, apparently good for tillers.

I don't think the PTO moving while in neutral is a problem unless it rotates with a load.

Oops. Sorry. Looks like I revealed my ignorance in my post above. :(
