As I move closer to purchasing a new Kioti I have began to wonder about the best ways to tie one down to a trailer. I have read all the threads about straps vs chains and dont want to start that debate again:D.

But, I am wondering does a DK40/DK45 come with any locations on it made just for hooking chains on? Most of the larger equipment I have been around has integrated hooks just for trailering.

Just looking for opinions/suggestions.

Thanks.....

Whether straps or chains, you need two on the front and two on the back. Each one has to be rated at or more than half of the total weight they're holding/tractor weight. Each has to be independant of each other. Otherwords. no wrapping one chain around the axle and hooking at two points on the trailer.

To go around the axles, I use short nylon straps that have a D ring in each end. I loop them around the axle and hook one end of the hold down strap in both D ring ends. Also keeps from scratching the paint. I found mine at Tractor Supply Store. My CK30hst has no hold down points as probably the DK40 or 45 doesn't.

Suggest you talk to your dealer. They are delivering tractors all the time, new and ones in for service. Do you already have a trailer or getting one new? Perhaps when taking delivery they will show you how it's done. Let us know when you get your new toy, oops, tool and post some pics.

I took a look online and saw those straps. Seems like that might be a good way to secure it without messing up the paint.... I will probably pick up 4 of those.

Thanks for the input.

I would check your manual. Bobcat shows how and were to tie down the tractor when on a trailer in the manual. I don't see how it would be any different for your CK.

The CK30 is very easy to tie down without going around axles. I loop through the frame up front and the hitch assembly in the rear.

I have a ck30 fel bh and a tandum axle 7000 gvw trailor. I have trailored this tractor between my home and the cabin were it is housed around 60 miles one way. I use a` chain with a binder on the front bucket and two chains with binders on the rear. Usually I chain it down through the draw bar at the rear. After 600 hours a few scratches really don't matter any more. What I can tell you is this. When I load the tractor I center the tractor over the trailor axel's with the front bucket of the loader against the angle iron that is at the front of the trailor. My trailor is a 16 footer and has no trouble handling the ck30. When loading this way enough weight is on the front of the trailor and swaying of the trailor is not a problem.I have a 2009 chev with hd trailoring and have not had any issues moving this tractor. I am sure there are a lot of folks out there that would do it differently but the main thing is control of the trailor when loaded and safety.;);)

Yeah when I was buying my trailer I wanted to make sure that I got something large enough. If nothing else I probably went a little too large .

I ended up with a 14,000 lb Hudson deckover trailer that is 24ft long with the dove tail. I ended up getting a great deal on it......

Anyway though just looking for the best way to get the chains/straps on the tractor without tearing too much stuff up.

The Nylon straps are great for not scratching up the axles or other part you chain to but check local laws since some do not allow them and require chains only. I once used them to tie down a car and did not realize the frame rail I wrapped it around had a sharp edge that tore the strap and left the chain unattached.

I use 4 chains (2 front, 2 rear) and then use a strap for the attachments. For example my loader and backhoe get a nylon ratchet strap across them just for peace of mind and so they are not bouncing around on these rough NH roads, especially in the winter.

to avoid scratches I have several short pieces of 5 inch diameter fire hose that I run the the chain through.

The apparently have outlawed straps here and chains are required. Good tip on the straps.

I have done some checking here in PA about what the actual law is about straps vs chains. I have talked to a few different truck drivers, some of them are using straps even on heavy loads like rolled steel. A friend of mine has a new aluminum spread axle trailer that has probably 20 or 30 straps integrated into the trailer frame that slide forward and back. Other guys say they only use chains and nothing else. Haven't given up on searching yet...

In PA, I talked with the motor carrier/commercial truck inspectors at the local state police station. They told me straps or chains are legal but you never know if the state will change the law someday. As of now, they've heard nothing about any changes.

Thats interesting because I was told by a PA state trooper that straps are not legal for hauling tractors and they must be secured by four seperate chains. My local dealer told me the same thing...

If your state has adopted the Federal Motor Carrier regulations, (and it probably has), you have choices for securing loads which include chains or straps.

Here's a helpful link to take a look at.

It includes specs for number of tie-downs, and what forces it must be able to withstand.

I find the best way to secure your tractor is to make sure it is on the TOP side of the trailer....

That's a good way to go to prison and then be sued for everything you own in a wrongful death civil suit. Here's a news article where a complete moron used straps to 'secure' rolled steel on his truck and killed 3 people just last month. Steel coil falls off semi, strikes 2 cars, kills 3 | SafetyNewsAlert.com | Occupational safety and health news for workplace safety professionals. If you know truckers using straps to hold rolled steel, they are a danger to themselves and everyone else on the road! They should immediately lose their license and take up a new career.

Yeah, I'll be the jerk here and tell you that it's flat stupid to use straps to secure a rolling load. Just dirt, grit or sand in a strap can cause it to fray and fail. A slight casting mark on an axle can easily cause one to break. Just answer this question to yourself; how wonderful would you feel about yourself for saving $50 after you killed 3 people because of your ignorance? I'm all for saving money and buying cheap disposable junk tools when they aren't critical. When it comes to the safety of others on the road, you're completely selfish and deserve jail time if you think they aren't important.

You're not being a jerk. You are just concerned that you and others do things safely. We all have skin in the game. But just because someone doesn't do it the way you would does not mean it is wrong or unsafe...but it might be depending on exactly how they did it and what they used.

I don't know about steel rolls and how best to secure them.

We are talking about tractors here. You can safely secure a tractor on a trailer using proper straps secured properly. But you can unsafely use straps too. But it is legal and safe to use appropriately sized straps on tractors.

But you raise a good point about avoiding abrasion and checking your equipment before you use it. Chains can wear as well. I think we've all seen loose chains dragging on the pavement throwing up sparks and grinding the links down. The main thing is to be informed, safe and protect others around you.

I use both straps and chain.

I agree with you completely.

Part of my last post was more of a case in point than something to be used as an example. Just because someone else does it, does not mean its right believe me I have experienced that.

Actually I have 4 3/8 grade 70 chains and binders on order.....

After further investigation, whether the strap is cut or not, most people dont realize that the straps that have 10,000lbs all over them are really only rated for 3300lbs or close to that anyway...... There are many applications which those straps would work fine for. I just think with the size tractor I am looking at chains would be something I am more comfortable with.
