Hi, i have a question that I'm sure has been debated but i cannot find on TBN.
Which type of sealant use on the thread of the hydraulic connections?
Thanks

What type of fitting is it???

NPT is the only ones that require sealant. JIC 37* flair and o-ring fitting do not require sealant.

If it is indeed NPT, you can either use the loctite pneumatic and hydraulic sealant, which is liquid like loctite only it is purple. Or you can use the loctite teflon paste. You shouldn't use tape on hydraulics. I perfer the teflon paste as the liquid purple stuff almost acts like red loctite, and removing the fitting down the road is a bear.

I'm not familiar with terms but I have to connect hoses to the lever block that control a 3 point wood splitter. previously I have used common teflon tape, but I sense it is not the best.

Teflon tape works, just be careful not to get any past the end of the fitting. This tape can tear off and potentially plug orifices etc. Loctite paste or hydraulic sealant are supposed to be non contaminating. Be careful using teflon tape, it is a lubricant and makes it easier to over tighten pipe threads and crack castings.

The best is a PTFE paste, not regular pipe dope from Home Cheapot...And stay away from tape.

Loctite and Permatex both have it.

Most auto parts places will carry a Permatex high temp thread sealant in a little squeeze tube for a couple of bucks. I forget the exact name or number of the product. Works fine for me.

Don't get the thread lock, get the sealant.

I have used teflon tape and will never do it again. If the teflon gets hyd fluid on it, it will be eatin up. The cheapest and best thing I found that works is the high temp permatex, hydraulic fluid won't bother it.

I recommend Teflon® (PTFE) Paste Thread Sealing Compound. You can buy this at your local hydraulic shop. You can also buy it online at DiscountHydraulicHose.com and other hydraulic fitting suppliers.

As others have pointed out, you only need sealant with tapered threads, such as NPT. Other threaded connections, like JIC, ORB and ORFS do not need sealant, and you should not use it with those connections.

I've been very happy with loctite 545. No fuss, no mess. A bit expensive, but works on air, water and hydraulics.
