Back on the farm. Here we go again. Every once in awhile it would be necessary to reverse the wheels to get a wider stance for certain row crops. This was after the wheels had been rotated out on the rim. By reversing and rotating the wheels out you could gain about 18" depending on the tractor.

Wouldn't changing side for side keep the lugs "pointed" in the right direction so they are not on backwards? Maybe that is what you meant by "reversing".

Changing from side to side is rotating. (You are rotating from left side to right side.)
Flipping them inside to outside is reversing. (Youare reversing their rolling direction.)

If you do either one they will be on backwards. (Backwards to the original direction.)
If you do both, rotate and reverse, they will be turning the same direction as original.

As has been mentioned... Your tracks in the snow or earth, on a (driven wheel) should always point to where you came from.
On a pushed wheel like the front tires of a motor grader, they should show a track pointing to where you are going. KennyV.

What is funny around here sometimes the motor graders have the rear wheels on backwards so they can get themselves out of the mess they got into. They are usually alone when grading the logging roads and cell phones do not help where they are.

I've seen experienced grader operators get themselves out of some fairly deep ruts with the hydraulics on the blade. Using the blade like a paddle to push themselves backwards.
Lately I am seeing more and more road graders with what looks like giant turf tires, equally good in both directions and probably a little better lateral traction too.

My neighbor reverses his front tires in the winter to get better traction when blowing snow.
Makes sense when you think about it.

Sorry everyone. Today I double checked thinking the V pointed backwards but I was wrong on all tires. The V is pointing forward as they should. I guess the snow print is what threw me.

Next time I'll double check before putting foot in mouth.

All kidding aside...any ag tire I've seen in the past 20 years has a "direction of travel" arrow inprinted on the side wall. Anyone???

Yep , should have direction arrow on side of tire .

Mine do. I noticed it yesterday when I was looking for the tire size so that I can record it here at home.
