I'm not sure if this is a universal discount, but the Lowe's store in my hometown of Rocky Mount, VA gives a 10% discount to military veterans. I show my ID card from the VA hospital where I get health care. My sister gets the discount in the Deltona/Orange City Fl Lowe's too. The way I understand it, the discount is for anything-same as employee discount. Hope this helps you save a bit of money.

Around these parts (central KY) we get the military discount on Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Needless to say, I try to schedule any major purchases from Lowe's around those 2 days.

Then again, those are the 2 times they advertise the discount; I've never tried it on any other day, so maybe they would honor it if I did.

It was never advertised around here that I heard about. I heard about it in the barber shop some time last summer. I told my sister about it, and she had not heard it but got the discount at her next purchase.

You got me curious so I did some searching and found this:
MOORESVILLE, N.C., Feb 10, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Lowe's Companies, Inc. announced today it will expand its support of the military by offering an all day, every day 10 percent discount to all military personnel who are active, reserve, retired or disabled veterans and their family members, with a valid, government-issued military ID card.

All other military veterans will receive the discount on the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day weekends.

And, since I'm a card-carrying retired veteran, I'm in. :D

I will have to check this out too. I am retired so a 10% discount will come in handy.

I 've alway wondered what constitutes a vet. I served in the army reserve for 6 years in the late 60 's early 70 's. I 've been told by many that doesn 't count because I did not do any lengthy active duty. At the time reservists did 8 weeks boot camp and then advanced training in a specialty. After, the monthly weekend drills and 2 weeks summer camp. I know this, in my time, reservists discharge were not given i.d. of any kind to prove they had done military time. Just curious how it is viewed now days.

Sailorman, get a copy of your DD214, that will prove you are a veteran.

And by the way, thank you for your service!

You wouldn't have received an ID - only retirees get them. CT_Jeff is right - a copy of your DD214 would be all the proof you should need.

I'm not in the armed forces, but I am a contractor and to save some cash I go on ebay and buy 10% off coupons, usually go for around $1 apice. I stock up quite a bit. Hope this helps.

I always thought that you had to have 180 days of continuous active duty to be considered for veteran's benefits. I do not know that to be the case, and a check with the Veteran's Administration would surely be the wise thing to do. It seems someone who served honorably in the reserves should also be granted veterans status. I'm just not sure if not doing the required active duty disqualifies you. Didn't the army have a 2-year active requirement?

BTW: If you have a project that exceeds $2000, Lowes will submit it to their quote system and get you very good pricing. I just built a deck and saved almost 20% over the retail prices. The project desk is the place to go with your bill-of-material.

2nd Edit: Thank you Backdoor for posting this. I didn't know about the all-the-time 10% discount. That is gonna save me lots of money. I just passed on buying a Weber grill at Lowes because I could get a better deal from HD. If I had known about the discount, I'd have saved $65.

3rd Edit: Sheesh! My Lowes has added tractor implements this year. They have tillers, rotary cutters, boxblades, and landscape rakes sitting in front of the store in a fenced-in area.

Ironically, this morning I went into Lowe's and bought a $398.00 rear wheel drive brush lawnmower not knowing about the Veteran discount. Got home, fired it up, fussed around with a few other projects and later on opened up TBN to find this post. I downloaded the linked text and in the language is stated "Excluded from the discount are sales via Lowes.com. previous sales and purchases of services or gift cards".
Thought I was a dead duck due to the "previous" part of the statement (all of four hours previous) so I called the store and was told to bring my receipt and proof of military experience, in my case it would be my wallet card Veterans Universal Access Identification card or my DD-214. Take it to the returns desk and they "will be happy to refund me $39.80!"
Do it vets-we have earned it. Thank you Lowe's.

Indeed it is/was 180 days for benefits. The army was very careful to make sure our active duty ( boot + advanced training ) ended before that. Mine ended exactly at 179 days . I hope nobody gets me wrong here. I ain 't whinin' about benefits. I don 't need them or want them, and don 't feel cheated by not gettin' them. I was more curious as to how places like Lowes define veteran. Sorry for kinda side trackin' the thread .

The Lowes near Fort Lee/Petersburg, VA has been giving the 10% discount since they opened in 2009. The HD up the road only gives on 4th of Jul and Veterans Day. So all my business goes to the Lowes even if I end up paying more. Serving 180 consecutive days will qualify you as a veteran but does not allow you to carry a military ID card (even though you could be eligible for some veteran benefits). Those are normally reserved for veterans who have served for 20 years and are eligible for retirement benefits.

According to the press release, in order to get the discount on any day of the year one must either be on active duty, in the reserves (and, I assume, the National Guard), retired or a disabled veteran. In other words, if you possess a military ID card (those 4 categories all receive them) you can claim the discount.

To receive the discount on Memorial Day, July 4th and Veterans Day, one need only be able to prove that they are or were in the military; with an ID Card, a DD214, or maybe by wearing a real cool flight jacket with lots of patches and a pair of ray-bans.

:D

I just wanted to say "thanks" to all you vets. We would not have a LOWES , if not for the veterns of this great USA.

I also think that what LOWES is doing is one of the nicest gestures it could do.

My American Legion member card has my active service dates on it...wonder if that suffices?

Russ,
Spin on your heals and take that receipt back to the Lowe's return desk, have a military credential in hand and they will give you a 10% refund. I did it this morning after reading this post after purchasing a lawn mower the day before. I then bought about another $50.00 worth of stuff and at the checkout counter and presenting my same Veteran's ID they swished off the 10%. Nice.

I went to Lowes yesterday and bought about $50 worth of stuff. I showed my US Navy retired ID and got the 10% discount. On the way home, my wife and I stopped in a restaurant and had dinner. The discount paid the tip. Can't complain about that. . . :)
