Live vs. Non-Live PTO Question.......

   / Live vs. Non-Live PTO Question....... #11
Mowing is the exact intention of this tractor so I will not even look at non-live PTO (unless it is independent).

Thanks guys.

independent pto is live by definition.

non live pto works fine for mowing as long as you use and ORC..

to add 'more' pto options to the basic '3' listed above, there is also ground speed pto.. :)

...and even a 4th if you will.

With my HST, you disengage BOTH the transmission and PTO at the same time with a single stage clutch.

You can't stop the PTO (as with a trans PTO), you can't move the tractor and you can't run the PTO w/o the trans clutch being engaged. This can make for difficult shifting between HST ranges during PTO use.

What brand tractor is that?

Different from my HST Deere. There is no clutch to the tranny. PTO is on its own clutch for engaged, free-running (neutral), and braked-stop.

On a non live PTO when the tractor clutch is pushed in the the tractor will still keep moving forward until the implement ( like a rotary cutter) quits spinning.

BTDT!!

I've had personal experience with a number of options. I bought a little grey market tractor with a non-live PTO. I mowed with it, but I had to plan way ahead for any kind of stops or turns. The tractor would travel 4 or 5 feet after depressing the clutch from the power of the spinning brush hog alone. I got pretty good at popping the tranny into neutral. I also learned to run the mower up to speed in neutral, and then pop the tractor into gear to get moving. This avoided the feathered look at the beginning of a pass.

Next I bought an overrunning clutch for this same tractor. It was like night and day. I could mow tight little places that I had never even dreamed of mowing before. I felt safer, and my mowing looked better. If you get an ORC, a non-live PTO is not bad. I never really found the issue of no-power with the clutch depressed to be a problem. I can't think of a time when I personally would have the clutch in for long enough periods of time that I would need power.

Next I bought a HST tractor. The PTO is still, technically, non-live since depressing the clutch cuts power to the PTO. The difference here is that I only ever use the clutch when engaging or disengaging the PTO. This is by far my favorite configuration so far for mowing. I love the infinite and instant variability in speed with the HST.

I have a 6 foot mower and used it on both live and non-live. A two clutch system is a little easier since you can start the mower blade spinning before moving the tractor. With the single clutch, I leave tractor in neutral, start the mower blade spinnig, put clutch back in, shift tractor and go. The momentem and weight of the blades will keep the mower turning a long time. After the mower is spinning, I really don't notice any difference in the operation.

I believe your MF-150 already has live power or has a 2 stage clutch. Using an external overiding clutch still is advised.

There are guys here that are more knowledgeable about the terminolgy, but I borrowed an older Kubota w/5' rotary mower and the tractor would not stop when the clutch was depressed. You'll be back, looking for the definition of "Pucker-Factor"! Not fun! That's a big 'flywheel' back there..........~Scotty
