Hahh,
Yet a_NOTHER example of having to hold buttons IN for a few seconds.
Daylight savings time - TODAY !
There are SO MANY devices around here that need their clock, time, hour, etc. buttons pushed and HELD for a few seconds before the display starts flashing to indicate that the adjustment can be made.
This is SO intuitive these days that I had forgotten about it earlier in this thread, yet when I got up this morning and noticed that my computer said an hour later than a few clocks around here I just wandered around and did it without thinking very much about it.

So, I guess the "Press and hold pressed" should be ingrained in many/most of us by now.
It has been a LONG TIME now since I visited anyone and saw an electronic device flashing 12:00 (-:

What is "intuitive" about pushing a button marked "START" to "STOP"????
I don't understand why they ever came up with that design in the first place. There should be a start button and a stop button on every car right from the beginning.

Can you imagine the confusion if the key switch was designed the same way as the start button? "To start the engine;Turn the key it once forward. To stop the engine turn the key forward and hold it for three seconds.":confused2:

I think if it is marked "Power" and is used a couple of times a day it rapidly becomes intuitive that it is both the "On" button and the "Off" button.
There are SO MANY things like this that even Luddites such as myself have adapted (-:
OTOH, if it is marked "P" it might take more than a day for some people to stop thinking that it means into/out-of "Park".
Similarly, "N" or "Neutral" are unambiguous in that context - IMLO, etc.

Not all things translate well between cultures or languages;
The oft told story of a garment manufacturer that contracted to make Large and Extra Large - that part worked fine, XL was spec'd as a certain percent larger than L.
Small was spec'd and came out fine too.
The request for extra small resulted in a size somewhere between small and medium.
PERFECTLY reasonable from one way of thinking, not so for another.

I just read a Car and Driver article in the Dr's office yesterday. They tested one of the recalled Camrys, a Lexus, and a Rousch Mustang. They got up to 60mph and then punched the accelerator to mimic runaway. Once it got up to 70mph, they kept the accelerator punched and used the brakes to stop. All three vehicle's brakes overcame the engine and stopped the vehicle. The they popped them all in neutral for the second test, and stopped easily.

Not so many years ago when the accelerator pedal was connected to the carburretor or injector pump etc,... through a whole series of mechanical links with ball joints and elbows and belcranks and little springs etc,....some were more complicated than others and some were quite simple,...... . . .

...BUT,...sure they would occasionally jam or catch or for one reason or another, simply jam the pedal to the metal!! Happened a fair amount. I recall even as a little kid riding with my mother in our 39 Plymouth,...the pedal stuck to the floor and she did NOT panic,.....simply jumped on the clutch, shoved the stick into neutral and stuck her toe under the pedal and flipped it back up!

She eased it back into gear and all returned to normal,....no problem. This took place in downtown Toronto traffic way back in the 1940's, (ancient huh?) but it was handled almost as calmly as an everyday occurrence,..which it was NOT!

This happened a lot in winter, when you had to slap the gas pedal to the floor a couple times to close the choke before hitting the starter. Pedal stayed down, you flipped it up with your toe,...(common experience).

QUESTION: does pulling the pedal up NOT work on these new units? (OR did I miss something in this lengthy read?)

CHEERS!
. . tug

As I suggested a few times,

Tie a length of cord to the pedal leaving the free end handy to reach! (like hanging from turn signal arm or even the ignition switch)

If needed, all you would need to do is yank on the cord to return the pedal to idle position.

Called "KISS".

Push button ignition is one of the dumbest things they ever came up with..Can anyone see the need for this?...I can't, and I don't want one either.

Having to start your car with a key isn't that much of an issue, if it is, sit on your couch and leave the rest of us alone.

Hear of the stories of being 30 miles way with the valet holding your key?

This is a solution looking for a problem.

Don't have this problem with my '70 Chevelle SS:D

And what has been stated more than a few times is that the pedal is not connected to anything but electrons. You could yank it through the roof and it would have no impact on what the computer is telling the throttle body.

Toyota employs a great many folks in the US. What is bad for them is bad for everyone. On one hand, this feels like the Audi witch-hunt all over again. On the other hand, HOPEFULLY this will send a signal to someone that automakers need to be very serious about making sure their junk works.

Unfortunately, this will decimate Toyota's position at the top. Building your entire image on quality and for that to end up being a farce (or, at the very least PERCEIVED as a farce) is not good for business.

On the Audi, I always wondered if the gas and break pedal were to close together. The area down there was very narrow, it was like a tunnel. So maybe the problem was related to the tunnel affect and not electronics. Just thinking out loud.
On the other hand, somebody on the news tonight said, yes you could hit the wrong pedal, but you would notice this and release, not floor it.
