Old Diesel-Heads Going Gas

   / Old Diesel-Heads Going Gas #11
Well guys I thought I'd group this into one thread and hope it doesn't get shut down due to brand bashing. I know we can be rather "passionate" about our brands. I was wondering, of the current diesel pickup/truck owners out there, who was considering buying a gasser on your next truck purchase? Considering the normal maintenance costs of a diesel and the newer maintenance costs of the "EPA friendly" engines or, like me, you don't use it enough now to justify the costs. What are your thoughts? :anyone:

I went with the Ford V10. I only put 2-3000 miles a year on, if that. The V10 has plenty of power, for what I need. I sometimes trailer a 9000#tlb, and, haven't been let down yet. If I did a lot more towing, hauling, I would probably go Diesel, But only for the fuel mileage. I did put Headers on, since I had a few broken manifold bolts, that had to be fixed anyway. Like yourself, I can't justify the cost of a diesel, based on the amount I drive.

I'm almost 50 and purchased by first diesel (Dodge 2500 quad cab 4x4) a little over a year ago. Wish I made the switch 25 years ago when I bought my first pickup. I only tow a few times a year, 3 horse bumper pull and small tractor. Nothing like a diesel in my book. The few hundered dollars per year in upkeep is well worth it to me. After warranty is complete, I will do all the deletes and have a real diesel. Not much of a fan of the EGR and DPF.

Ontario Canada, roughly a dime/litre, which is .45 per gallon.

I just filled up tonight on the way to the NCAA finals. 87 octane $2.77 Diesel $3.09 for a $.32 difference.

As much as I like diesels, Davy's reasoning for getting the V-10 was the same as mine. I agree with Chris (DiamondPilot) that Ford is making a mistake in making the V-10 go away.

I really like my 96 F350 Powerstroke.
However if it got totalled tomorrow I'd probably reluctantly go gas.

A week ago diesel was 3 cents a gallon more than gas here, then this weekend it jumped to 15-20 cents more than gas.
I'm really tired of that price instability, I've not seen it less than gas for 20+ years...

I also get tired of the hassle of fill ups, probably only 10% of the "gas" stations around here have pay at the pump for diesel..I really hate going in to stand in line behind the beer and lottery ticket buyers..

14 qt oil changes, $10 oil filters, two batteries to replace...

For me the balance is tilting back toward gas...but I hope I don't have to make that decision...have 180,000 mi on the Powerstroke, hope to get at least that many more.;)

My 97 PSD 350drw is at the point where i'm starting to spend too much money fixing things (bad a/c, idle surge, front end problems, glow plugs, interior problems as well, power windows don't work, which sucks w/no a/c., power locks don't work, dash is cracking. . . could go on and on. I'm by no way saying that it's been a bad truck, have 220k on the clock and have used it hard the entire time i've owned it (over 150K miles).
It is now time for me to look for a new truck and i think i'm going to get one of the new 2011 f250 when they come out. I am a little nervous about the new engine and all the electronics but i don't feel that a Gas engine is for me.
I don't Pull my tractor very far,(15 miles max form the house at this time) but i do pull a enclosed trailer (24') at least once a month. We also travel a lot and i like the room in the larger super duty trucks. My biggest decision will be to go 4wd or not.
O i did have sticker shock when i went and look at the 2010 on the lot and thought there was no way in . . . . that my wife would go for it, (more that i paid for my house 17 years ago) but she said go for it you need something nice. . . I have a good one:D

I bailed on my troublesome GMC Dmax and went gas. There is no way I am going to take a 6K risk on a new engine that might or might not be a good one due to electronics. I don't see where diesels pay off anymore unless you use them commercialy...... And even then, they better be towing every day.

Why a F-250 when you currently have a F-350? Also if you have a 4x4 now and you are considering a 2 wheel drive you will be disappointed even if you only use it 3 time a month. You will kick yourself the first time you are stuck. I have had 3 F-350 diesel that were 4x4 and SRW with high GVWR packages and they are as tough as they come. My 06 has 11,500# and will easily handle my 18,000# bumper pull trailer and can also take 2 tons in the bed if needed.
