SkyPup's adventure is why I don't commute or ride much in town.

I've been riding for 45 years, have owned alot of bikes, last count 28 of them. Since 03 my main ride is BMW K1200LT, its my second BMW. My wife and I take two weeks of vacation a year on this bike, would not think of going in the car. We have done many 700 mile days. If you are searous about riding I would look at BMW's, they are great bikes that ride and handle really well.

SkyPup that's like a scene from a B movie; glad you are ok. I would probably load my pants if it happened to me.
How did you feel getting back on the bike? My wife and I, freshly married went down on my Honda 750 and skidded cca 100 yards middle of the road with cars on both sides. Gotta say I was very careful driver for a long time after that.

I just typed in "motorcycle safety class in tyler texas" and got this result.

Motorsports Training Center Tyler, Longview, and Texarkana Texas

For less then $200, they will spend 16 hours in two days teaching me how to ride, and they provide the bike. I need a few things, but nothing that I wouldn't buy anyway. I'm going to check it out sometime this week. Supposed to be a big thunder storm tomorrow, so I'l work around that.

HOPEFULLY they will also teach you the value of armor in clothing.
Denim is good for about a 2 inch scrape along black-top, after that it is skin, then flesh, then bone.
PLEASE don't become a muscle shirt, shorts and sneakers rider.
There is nothing Macho about leaving skin, blood and bone on the road.

I would concurr with the suggestion of a V Star 1100. Great bike, comfortable, easy to maintain inexpensive to buy.

Aren't those the bikes that you have to pull the exhaust header to change the oil? I might be confused--never owned one myself. . . .

Ouch. Way back when I bought my Aspencade (Honda Goldwing), I first took my wife for a ride on a new Suzuki 1400, then I went and looked at the big Kawasaki cruiser and eliminated it when I saw what was required just for an oil & filter change, I thought I wanted the big Yamaha so went to the dealer to take my wife for a ride on one and she got on the back seat in the showroom with the bike on the center stand and said, "Nope; don't like it." So the Goldwing it was and I never regretted it for a minute.

Eddie,
Understand your desire to be "out and about", but I have to agree with most of the grayhairs . GET YOUR SELF A CAR!
It really doesn't matter if you are the BEST driver in the world, what you have to be concerned with is some teenager
with about three hours driving experience driving a raised 3 ton pick up truck, trying to impress his girlfriend.
Let's see, you 225+750lbs for the bike=1000lbs
Pick up truck=6000lbs
Get my point?
You know what we used to call motorcycle riders(particularly those w/o helmets.)
Body part donors on wheels

This topic is far too subjective to individual taste to give good advice on, in my opinion. Kind of like asking which color should be my favorite. Everyone is going to have a passionate opinion on which are good bikes. I personally don't like cruisers, but that doesn't mean that you won't. I suggest you do some research on the motorcycle forums and take a look around at the local dealers until you home in on a couple of different models. My 2 cents anyway. Good luck with your search.

I don't think a Miata would help in that situation either.
