With 87 HP. have you considered a pull type disk?

I pulled a 4 bottom 16" semi mount plow with my 7710-II. The tractor pulled it fine in my soils which are more demanding then most. These plows are actually cheap now and I bought mine for $127. It is a MF model 880 and was actaully a base 4 with a fifth bottom that could be added or removed. I bought mine out of Ohio and find them advertised often for very little money.

I would not go with a 2 bottom on your tractor as it really is too small. A 3 bottom 16" turn over plow would be a good match and would be 3pt mounted. A 4 bottom semi mount was a good match for me though.

Also, my plow is a hydrualic reset which is nice as I can adjust the amount of tension it takes to trip the plow bottoms from the tractor cab. There is no way I would buy another plow without some sort of auto reset bottom.

Two bottom is toooooooo small for your tractor. 3 or 4 is what you want. Fours are cheaper than threes as less people want them. Fours are harder to handle especially in a semi-mount if you do not already know how to pull a plow. The older JD's like the old F-125 is a really heavy plow ( had to hang 10 weights on the front of my 706 IH to keep it on the ground with that plow ) but does a poor job at best. I replaced it with a four bottom IH semi-mount. When you see the two plows side by side you can see why the IH does so much better. The moldboard on the IH rolls forward at the end, and the JD rolls back at the end. The IH shatters the ground as it comes off, and the JD will let the intact dirt role right back in the furrow it just opened. WHAT A MESS.

I haven't read on here enough to know why people think that JD plows pull hard/aren't good, etc, but we have a 3-16" bottom JD 1600 plow (late 80's model) and it has been great for us over the years. It has spring reset bottoms (not just trip, but they reset themselves without stopping), huge trash clearance, and its very heavy built. We pull it with a JD 2550 row-crop, which is 65 PTO hp, and it handles it well in most soil. In really tough going, hard yellow clay, etc, its a good pull for that tractor, but overall I think its a well matched combo. I didn't read your other thread to know what kind of tractor you have, but something you should also consider is how wide your tires are and if the will fit in the furrow. Our JD has 15.5-38s which works great for a 16" furrow.

Why not try a chisel plow, one with the deep hooked shanks and points will tear up some hard ground in a hurry, and not much of a learning curve compared to the older plows.

It's not why I think Deeres pull hard. My own experience has been they seem around my area to pull very hard. Most people in this area seem to be of the same opinion. I have used IH, Deere, and Ford (Oliver/White) on the same tractors over the years and the Deere just pulls harder. Most of the farmers I know that still use this type of plow have switched away from the Deere. A friend of mine that I do plowing for with his tractor and plow, when he switched from a 4 btm deere to a 4 btm Ford of the same width. I can now pull 1 and sometimes 2 gears higher. I tried all kind of adjustments, but could never get the Deeres to pull as nice.

One thing I found out not that long ago is that Deere on some models was/is making an option of kneverland bottoms on there plows. I would love to try a set with those just to see how they pull.

General consensus in this area seems to be that the White brand plow pull the best followed closely by IH.

IH model 700 (I think) 4-16's with 85 HP white cover lots of ground with no problems. I think the replacemnt model was a 701. When I quit farming 20 years ago these where very popular here in the north country. Not sure how many of them made it down south.

In my instance the Ford plow we had was the worst thing we ever had. Never did get it to work and traded it for the IH. Not sure if the frame was sprung or some thing it just would not work right and was like pulling a loaded freight train.

Very hard pulling is how I would describe a JD plow. I owned a JD 3020 tractor back in the seventies and pulled a 3-14 mounted 145 JD plow. I did this for 10 years thinking I was doing real good. Then my business took in on trade a 4-14 Ford trip plow with 3 point hitch. I decided to just see if I could budge it on one sunny spring day, and to my surprise, I could run with it and it did not edge up the ground being turned like the JD did. We keep JD plows on our retail lot because some customers will have nothing else. You know the old saying the "customer is always right". Ken Sweet
