i have a nh 1520 with 19 pto hp i ran my 25 kw generac pto genset and was able to run a 9 inch angle grinder and a 3 hp air compressor with no problem. when i would hook it to the transfer switch and run the whole house off the generator including well pump[ and washer, i had not problems with voltage or freq stability, if i set the freq at 62 hz with no load, i could flip the transfer switch and it would settle down to 60 hz and run as long as i wanted it to, even with freezer and refrig and well pump cycling off and on. i did not see much voltage variation or frequency variation even with this relatively small tractor. the generac unit was a beast weighing over 500 lbs and that is a lot of spinning weight along with the tractor fly wheel i thing that absorbed a lot of the fluctuation. the tractor would run about 7 hours on a 7 gal fill up.

I'm here to verify what you posted, I have a Genrac 20 KW - 40 KW surge PTO generator which I use with a NH - TC 29 D - 29 HP ..and it runs the whole house - 2 heat pumps, well, freezer , frig..all of it no problem..same fuel consumption you mention and it is a beast..like you say about 500#

I dropped in at my local HF a couple of days ago.
They don't stock it, not a sufficiently rural area I guess (-:
They looked it up and it showed with all the codes to say they don't have it locally, don't stock it and can't order it.
I got home that night and haven't been able to find it on their web site since.
I searched by 65309, as well as everything I could think of, "PTO", "generator", "generater, etc. but the number comes up not found and the keywords don't get it.

So, it looks like it is either discontinued or they are between suppliers ?

Here is one you might want to investigate....>

For that I could probably put a mid size tractor on the 1,000 RPM output shaft and take the engine revs down to 54%, or for through the night operation of back-up power.
~quiet~

Yeah, mid size tractor is also undefined (-:
Running a 540 Gen on 1000PTO at reduced engine speed is not viable unless your governor holds speed exceedingly well under load changes or you are running a constant load. At 1k pto gearing the pto speed changes more as the engine speed changes so the engine must hold better [about twice as well] at the chosen rpm for the gen speed to stay as constant as on 540 gearing.

back in post 38 i mentioned the issues with 1k pto and 'half' engine speed being an issue..

no one seemed to care about it then either.. :)

fine with me.. someone else can do the expensive expirement with a 1000+$ head and tractor and then figure out what they really need... :)

I have a current catalog with the PTO generator. On the web site if you select "order from our catalog" and use catalog key cy7106 and part no. 65309-1cyh it should go in your cart. Get a big $5 off with coupon 288-385-127. No telling if they are actually in stock. If you order by phone they should be able to check.

Maybe theyll see it with the explanation. Even with ample ptoHP at reduced rpm the governor will have to control the engine twice as close for equal genny performance with load changes.

Sorry guys, I appreciate your inputs.
I have been thinking that as long as I'm drawing significantly less than the engine puts out at those reduced revs the governor should be able to handle it.
~2 HP per kilowatt, right ?
So if I'm only pulling say 6 Kw and have somewhere between 20 and 25 HP available at the 54% revs level, it seems like it should work OK.

This isn't exactly a DISASTER if it hunts around a bit when a fridge kicks in, I think most motors are spec'd for at least 5% each way.
I can always shut down and flip to the 540 gear if it hunts too much, just thought if I ever need to run it through the night it should make a decent sound difference.
No biggie either way.

I s'pose I could put it up on jacks, engage my highest gear and use those BIG flywheels on each end of the rear axle ?
(-:

Thanks again for your inputs.
{but I am still likely to experiment}

Treemonkey,
It has an auto voltage regulator that keeps the voltage/hertz pretty much in line. The digital meter on the unit tell you what the levels are. I set it at 60Hz with no load and then turned on central AC unit and a 18000btu PTAC unit and the Hz did not budge off of 60.

I agree with Treemonkey. I would be interested in a PTO unit like that.

We have an old 1992 Kolher 5000 watt generator in the MH and its voltage and Hz output are not a direct function of RPM's of the engine but are set by solid state devices that are adjusted with a screw driver.

Its no load output was 118 volts and when I reset it to 126 volts (factory spec) I was able to run a lot more things before brown out condition occured.
