Looks like my state requris brakes if the ''towed vehicle'' meets or exceeds 3000#.. It doesn't say if required on both axles or 1 .

I'll have to call the DOT & ask . If I'm able to talk to someone that has enough sense :laughing:to find that info.

It causes lots of problems for many vendors.

There are only one or two trailers that weight less than 700Kg to legally carry my Takeuchi TB125 @ 2800Kg. Even then, buckets, fuel, tools etc all have to go in the towing vehicle.

Kubota have a similar issue with the 2800Kg KX71 - so much so in Europe there is a smaller machine called the KX61 (built in Netherlands I understand) which weighs only 2600Kg giving that extra 200Kg payload for buckets, tools etc.

For those of us on pre-EU driving licenses, we can drive 7.5 ton gross weight lorries which will carry up to KX121 / TB135s and bits - but buying a lorry just to move a digger is a PITA for non-commercial people (although my daughter would probably like me to buy one with a demountable horsebox!).

As I said in my first post, you guys in US (not sure about Canada) are lucky!

I recognize lots of yalls terms like lou , bonnet, petrol, from just hearing and shows like house hunters international on HGTV, but what the h#!! is a Lorry? Horsebox? I fugure a horsebox is just a livestock or specialized horsetrailor, but there some crazy terms there considering we are speaking the same language. I figure a Lorry from context must be a dumptruck or a box truck.:confused2:

As to what soundguy said, what is the deal with letting some guy not tow his backhoe with a F-350 and a 10,000lb gooseneck trailer?

yep.. lorry is a truck essentially.. like a box or cargo truck.

here's the definition shamelessly pulled from wiki:

"A truck (American English) or lorry (British English) is a motor vehicle designed to transport cargo. Trucks/lorries vary greatly in size, power and configuration, with the smallest being mechanically similar to an automobile. Commercial trucks/lorries can be very large and powerful, and may be configured to mount specialized equipment, such as in the case of fire trucks and concrete mixers and suction excavators. Modern trucks are powered by either gasoline or Diesel engines, with the latter dominant in commercial applications".

@soundguy

Regulations on everything, sadly. Someone once said to me in UK you can do anything not expressly banned - however in Europe you can only do what is permitted. Not sure how true that is - but certainly what is more and more widely regarded as the EUSSR is trying to control more and more of life (assisted by some pretty dodgy local politicians).

@ nate

Lorry - I guess you would call them a truck - in this case a 7.5 ton, twin axle truck - however lorries tend to be the equivalent of your bigger trucks - we still would say a pickup truck, not a pickup lorry, for example for smaller vehicles.

Horsebox - yes, you guessed, a box on the back of a lorry for carrying horses.

The variations in english are always fun. I work in IT and computer networking - and we talk of routes and routing tables as in the network directions to get two computers to talk to one another. Route in UK is normally pronounce "root" - and a routing ("rooting") table to an Australian has an entirely different meaning!!!!

were they making them retrofit trailers that were previously legal? IE.. florida used to only require 1 brake axle on a tandem.. now requires both.. but afaik all the old tandems with 1 brake that were legal at the time of manufacturer are grandfathered in.. kind of like the seat belt thing.. vintage cars that never had em are granfathered and don't have to retrofit them..

soundguy

It depends on how the trailer is used, in the example of the lawn care guys they were using it in commerce so it is considered a commercial vehicle.

Some manufacturers still sell tandems with only brakes on one axle, that is fine for the guy using it to haul his own stuff not in commerce. But once he uses that trailer for monetary gain he is considered a commercial vehicle.

I can not speak for your state, in MN if you are not in Commerce you only need them on one axle, if in Commerce you need to follow the federal regulations that requires them on all axles.

i guess non comercial loaded trailers weight less than comercial loaded trailers so them pesky extra brakes aren't needed.. :)

some laws DO make ya wonder..
