Pillow bearing amount of grease ?

Bought a new cultipacker a few months back, used it once. It has a 2" axle with 2" pillow block bearing and grease fitting on each end. I did not grease it when I first got it, figured it was done at factory. Greased both fittings today with 20 pumps from handgun and new tube, but got no grease oozing anywhere. I just quit pumping because I was puzzled. I did check the pump, and it did squirt grease. If the bearings had never been greased would they take more than 20 pumps to fill?
Just pump more?

Never seen one with roller bearings. It sounds like the caps were never filled with grease.

Gale, I used the wrong name for the bearings. They're pillow block bearings. I edited my post. Thanks.

OK, that is what is normally used. The next time you use see of some grease works out. Normally 3-4 shots every few hours works best if they are not made to "retain" grease.

Do you have big end caps? Were are the grease fittings located?

When the block is filled you should feel pump resistance. Running pillow blocks dry is not a good thing, they may be done.

Okay, they probably are not full. I'll pump some more in tomorrow.
Hopefully they're not damaged. They got used three times about ten minutes each with ten minute break in between. Cultipacker axle is not high speed, so I don't think much heat could have generated. Thanks

I think you are about to mess up using more grease. 5-10 max pumps should do something like them because I think you were correct initially in that they may be roller bearings and you are about to blow the seals if you have not all ready.

Remove the fittings and see if any grease backs out. I do not see room for 6 oz of grease. If it does not then you are OK I think.

With that amt of use they are not damaged unless they were put together totally dry ... a negligent act in assembly. Rolling bearings dont need a lot of lube, but you gotta keep em wet. A few pumps every couple hrs of use is sufficient.

There was no resistance, even after 20 pumps. Will remove fittings and check.
