Getting rid of grass and weeds in a driveway

Honestley, I was not aware that it was illegal to spray oil on your drive. I do it this way because this is the way my dad did it and the way his dad my grandfather did it. It works. Our water level starts at about 160 feet down and to water tastes real good. The grass on both sides of the drive is lush and green, who knows, this has got my "Thinker" to thinking. I will look into doing it a different way.
But still what is different from spaying oil on the drive, compared to Round up. They are both a chemical that can run off from rain, and are both deadley if ingested. Any chemical over a length of time sprayed in the same area can't be good.
It is NOT illegal everywhere...that's just what they want you to think. My state and county still use used motor oil for dust control on hard packed roads (unimproved). On all but the sandiest soils it will decomposition stabilize at around 3-4". The county hydrologist maintains water testing stations at several locations and the results are published in the paper monthly...he has yet to find a higher than what is expected hydrocarbon PPM in any water samples. Test results typically show the expected PPM from normal highway runoff (grease, tar, asphalt petroleum distillates, gasoline and diesel). By the way, we have one of the cleanest freshwater lakes in the country in the watershed. Not saying it's right or wrong, just that it is legal in some places and is cheap and effective.

Make the soil non compliant to growing by changing the PH either up or down.:D

I have trouble making grass grow on the lawn but no trouble for grass to grow on the driveway.

I say DECLARE THE DRIVEWAY A LAWN and your troubles will go away! :D

I have a similar issue with my stone driveway and I Googled it. There is a simple recipe of one gallon white vinegar, one cup of table salt and one tablespoon of dish detergent. You just mix them together and spray it on the weeds/grass. I tried it today on my driveway weeds in the hot sun and they are already wilting and turning brown. I figured it was cheap and worth a try before I ordered a Roundup clone.

I use a flame device to scorch the leaves. It's only good though if there aren't tons of them to deal with. For lots and lots either give up or use roundup.

I like to see that I'm not the only redneck on this forum. You go guy!!!!!

Friend of my parents was in the Auto Repair business in Carson City Nevada... the Department of Highways would collect used motor oil and contaminated diesel and use it for dirt/gravel road dust control...

Can't imagine the Nevada Department of Highways would have been doing something illegal?

Seems to me that a lot of our laws are a result of helping "irrational" people make "rational" decisions! 20-30 years ago they were spraying the road shoulders in the Carolinas with transformer oil laden with PCB's! Didn't make it 'right', but with scientific knowledge, also comes responsibility! I doubt many folk are spraying asbestoes insulation in their walls for insulation. Now we have to write a law against "Texting" on a cell phone while driving!!! Well, DUH! Did we really need a law for that? ~Scotty
