50 hr oil change

I crumbled the bottom of the filter before the strap wrench broke. A real strap wrench or chain wrench would have done it.

I dumped the entire 20 l of oil in but I think I still ahve to add some. When cold the oil only comes 1/2 way up the glass. warm fills it tho.

Wade,
I am not really sure how much fuel mine would use during a long days work. I seldom use mine for over 4 or 5 hours and just top the tank off when done to avoid condensation building up. When I do my hydraulic oil change, I get a full five gallons out of the tranny and that is after pulling all of the tranny plugs and filter. One five gallon bucket of new fluid tops it off to 1/2 way up on the sight glass cold, after a short run to fill new filter.

Hey Sandlot,

This is an EXCELLENT suggestion. I just did my 50 hour service on my DK40SE HST over the weekend also! I agree with wade that the transmission filter is tighter than a misquetto's butt streched over a rain barrel... DANG!!! I'll post a pic of the tool I made to finally get it loose.. Cut 2 slots in a 1/2" drive sparkplug wrench .. then put a nylon strap in the straps and cinched it around the filter with a BREAKER bar to finally get it to move.

One question I have is my Transmission Filter (Big gray filter on Right side of tractor) came with an O ring in the box ..??? I did not see ANY O rings on the filter, or left on the nipple?? So I just put the new filter on and everything works great.. no leaks?? Now the yellow filter on the left side of the tractor DID have an O ring that I used...??? Could that O ring in the tranny filter been a mistake from the factory???

Carry on,
Phill

PS: I always have a hard time getting the smell of Gear Oil off of my hands ... any suggestions out there?

Yes, nothing quite like the smell of gear oil on the first date.........:laughing:I use vegetable oil to clean my hands of grease, it really gets to the pores. Used to use DAWN( dishwashing detergent) but that can be rough on the skin. Fast orange after the veggy oil seems to work best.

The tranny filter was the worst part of my first change also. I actually believe they put the filter on and then powder coated the frame. I found a plumbers chain wrench worked well to get the filter off, but even with it , it was no fun job.

I am a plumber and I norm. use a pipe wrench if it will fit to remove stubborn oil filters on heating systems, works like a charm!! a 12" pipe wrench fits around the filter

Great tip. I'll try to remember that one. My experience is that only the first filter changes are really difficult because of whatever they do at the factory to put the darn things on with. Still, I've collected about four different types of filter wrenches but never thought of using a pipe wrench. Thanks for the tip.

If I had a pipe wrench that day I would have used it, right after I broke the strap wrench. Maybe someday I get a garage again, ex wives humph. I was worried about ripping the bottom off or just twisting it into uselessness, but that faded as ideas didn't work. Luckily it came off.

I'm surprised no one has said anything about my head being between the wheel and the fel frame while the loader is holding the front end up. It didn't seem like such a bad idea at the time but looking at the picture....I did move the wheel so that it couldn't trap my head if the hydraulics released suddenly but still

Filter is probably being spun on dry, no finger hand massaging in oil on the o ring with tender loving care.

I did check the seat to see if there was any gasket material left...none, and it was fairly smooth.
Usually, at work, if I have to work that hard to get a gasketed piece apart there will be 1/2 of the gasket on the stationary part and 1/2 half on the mobile part.

The new gasket had oil smeared on it by the very irritated fingers left over relatively undamaged(smile)

Wade got to keep your sense of humour, I have 49 hours on my CK27HST, won't be back to lot for 2 weeks then I get to do the same without problems hopefully. And I now have a heads up.:D

In a twisted way I enjoyed it. It's been some time since I've worked on a vehicle of mine and it was rewarding to have it done and know that things are OK inside. If I have that problem next time, definitely pipe wrench.

Good luck with yours. Let me know if there is much metal on the trans drain plug magnet. There was very little on mine..I took it as a good sign.
