How does the weight work?

What is your goose registered for? I was never real clear on how that worked in Maine..

They asked about the dry weight,(6750) as soon as I told them that, it got a bit more expensive, but they did not ask about the gross weight. The power of attorney form, cost $20, but they told me, if I register any other trailers, that there is no fee for that. I will let you know, when I get the plates, and registration back from them.

Davy--

I will be watching this closely. I too live in the fabulous state of NY where their hand is in my pocket deeply!

I was discussing this with a co-worker and he thinks that a problem would occur if a NYS registered truck is towing a Maine registered tag. I responded that a number of TBN members do this. So my question is what would the police do if they pulled you over or if you went through a weigh station? What about inspections (if I ever had it done) ?

I am thinking of buying a 10Kish trailer in the near future and am thinking of doing this. My current trailers are 2-boat, 1-snowmobile, and 1-utility and registrations are killing me. I looked into dealer plates and that was even more outrageous as well as not possible. Would Maine be able to accommodate one plate for multiple units? (I know I'm dreaming:D)

Keep us informed, please.

I know, that anything under 3000LBS was much cheaper. At first, the lady I was dealing with misunderstood me when I told her the trailer weight. She thought the trailer weighed less than 3000 LBS. She told me that I only had to send a copy of the certificate of origin, not the original. She also told me there was no charge to title the trailer. She did however say I had to write a letter stating I would be using the trailer 80 % of the time outside NY. This information was not correct for me, because my trailer is 22,500 lbs gross. I would give them a call. write down all the questions you have, so you don't forget any, then call. it is an 800 number, and I put it in the first post in this thread. :) As far as getting any trouble from the police, I feel like, all the big trucks I see are apportioned in Ohio, in Maine, or Florida. Fleet tractors like Yellow, Schneider, and Conway, all mix and match tractors, and trailers. If your rig is clean, and the lights work, and your load is tied down properly, then I feel like there won't be any trouble. If you do get pulled over, then the guy is probably looking to write a ticket no matter what I tell him. in my case I live right on the border of NY, NJ, and PA. I will be out of the state 99.9 % of the time. I also have a cdl, and I do not go very far when I do haul my back hoe around. I also look at it like this. If I go a few years without any trouble, and for some reason get a ticket, even a $400 ticket, I am still way ahead of what I would have had to pay in new York, for taxes, yearly inspection, and yearly registration. I also am not using it commercially. I bring my tractor from my house, in NY to my property in Pennsylvania, and back.

My inlaws in Md have several trailers tagged in Maine. No complaints that I know of. At one time they had trucks tagged there too. I can't believe the prices you guys pay to tag a trailer. Guess I'm really lucky. All mine run farm tags at a cost of $5.50 a year per trailer.

Semi Registration.

Funny you mention semi, I see about 100-200 semi trailer chassis used to haul containers on per week. Half are registered in MA, the other half in Tenn.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of semi-trailers that live in NY but wear Maine tags.

I just registered my new 20+5 gooseneck in Maine. I used the Staub Agency 1-800-698-8805.

the staab agency is about 2 miles up the road from me. maybe 3.

How does the weight work?

i've never registered a commercially manufactured trailer here in maine - only several homemade ones. with my single axle snowmobile trailer, it was noted as 2000lb. i believe this is a nominal capacity for recreational vehicle trailers, so that they can be towed by non-commercial vehicles with a 6000lb registration. for my 2 axle (16 foot deck, v-nose & tip-up ramps) there is no weight noted on the trailer registration. my tow vehicle has to be registered for a weight that covers whatever is in/on the vehicle, along with the trailer. i've always registered with my local town office. never considered the staab agency. i always figured that was for people more "commercial" than me.

when i built my equipment trailer about 10+ years ago, i put the state police commercial vehicle enforcement division on the spot and went over every part i was using to make sure it was up to snuff. since i technically do not use the vehicle or trailer in commerce, i am actually allowed a couple of exceptions, but that was just breakaway brakes and an inspection sticker. othewise, the rules were the same. i have been meaning to corner one of them again to see whether anything has changed. problem is, trailers really are a bit of a gray area, and i have often got conflicting stories from the authorities.

it's actually kind of funny, people will go through hoops to register trailers here, but they will also go through hoops not to register vehicles here. all registered vehicles pay a hefty excise tax every year (a $40k truck will have about $850 in excise tax the first year). the tax goes down every year but bottoms out after 7 years. retirees register wherever their winter home is (often florida) and i've seen a lot of rentals registered in vermont. must be a lot cheaper there.

it doesnt matter if the trailer is reg in maine, but the truck in ny. i live in ny, too. unless you are commercial, you dont have to stop at a weigh station, so that is a non-issue. i blow past i87 exit 9 weigh station (i'm sure you know just what i'm talking about...) all the time with my personal pickup and trailer and no one bats an eye
