Mail Box Destruction

I wish I had that problem. For me it's cars hitting them. Three in four years. It's not like I can just put up an extra strong box on a large cement filled poll. Insurance companies are terrible when it comes to paying to replace them. I think of the three I've only gotten one "good news a check is in the mail" phone call, didn't see the check but as of three weeks ago it was on it's way.

After replacing mine a couple of times from the snow plow and a cars running off of the road. I upgraded from the plastic and the cheap metal to a "heavy duty" mailbox. They sell them at Lowe's for $70 I think.

I had a big grin on my face when I went down to get the mail on day and notice a "splash" of green pant on the side of the mailbox. It had a little dent on the side, not much to complain about. But I can just imagine that kid hanging out of the rear window, aluminum ball bat in hand.

GONG!! I'll bet that was the end of his turn!!

My parents have a neighbor who has a interesting mailbox. It starts with a chunk of telephone pole sunk into the ground, mounted to that is a piece of 2" pipe which is in an "L" shape. the short side mounts to the post in such a way that it can swing freely and there is a brace at a 45 degree angle from the short side to the long one.
Then there is another piece of pipe that goes down to the mailbox. I think it is L shaped and connected so that it can swivel from side to side. and the mailbox mounts to that.
When all is said and done, it will swivel out of the way of plows, bats, etc but comes right back into place.

The same neighbor also took a florescent green golf ball, put a threaded eye through it, hooked a chain to that and mounted the chain to the door of the mail box with a long bolt so that there is a piece of bolt sticking out. Then when they get the mail (or put mail in the box), they set the eye over the bolt. When the mail lady opens the door, the ball falls down, hangs from the chain and can be seen from the house (letting them know that the mail has been picked up/dropped off).

We had our mailbox hit twice in a week, just last week..

Dont put too much trust in the 'heavy duty' mailbox.. I bought the same one "20lb of steel", someone took a 10lb rock and crush it right in the middle.. And due to its construction I could not push the dent back out.. Also when they hit the mailbox it broke the post ($40) because the box did not give.. the box was less than 2mths old :-(

I ended up going with a $7 plastic mailbox now, much cheaper to replace.. and also it will give so the post doesnt break..

I'm telling you that you should check out the Fort Knox Mailboxes. They aren't 20LBS of steel, Mine is almost 100 LBS of 1/4" steel. I've read stories on the Fort Knox Mailbox website that talk about cars being totaled, and even one semi truck with 5k worth of damage and the mailbox ending up with scratches only. Sure, throw a bat at it, or even hmmmm... a CAR! I'm glad I made the investment...

"20 Lb mailbox = false security"

There, I did my good deed for the day..... :)

They sure look good.....On the other hand for the price of their cheapest I can buy 41 of the local cheap ones. That will take care of me for a long time.
