Schmism, the capacity is a bit shy, but the need for no ice or salt is intriguing.
Is the tub stainless or aluminum.

Milkman, the White Mountain I bought also had loose wooden paddles on the end of the dasher. The company said that the wood screws are suppose to be unscrewed 1/8 inch to allow flexibility. You should check them occasionally to make sure they don't go beyond 1/8". Is that how the older models also worked?

both ;)

the outer tub is stainless, there is an inner removable AL tub that fits like a glove to the outer tub.

so you load the AL tub with your mix in the kit, carry it via a little wire handle to the maker, drop it in the mixer, put the top on and off you go.

at the end pull out the AL tub, scoop it out and rinse for second batch or run through the dishwasher.

The top has a little "window" to add end of process items like fresh fruit etc.

It will also do fun stuff like sorbet if you have the recipe right.

ford850, those Lehman's are so close, if only they made an electric one. (a spec I left out, bum shoulder). Those Ice cream trailers are a ... aaa...WOW, but I'm only making ice cream for the club not the County. :D
Thanks!
TXDon,
I figured you would want the electric but I thought I'd share that link anyway. They are absolutely the nicest looking freezer's I've seen, but being made by the Amish the electric version would not make sense. The larger model does have a flywheel for the hand crank so you can attach a belt from a motor, but that it is a large freezer.

I have one of the smaller Cuisinart freezers and it works great. The bowls are stored in our chest freezer so we can make ice cream at moments notice. They do a nice job and are much easier to prepare and clean up afterwards. The ice cream tastes the same as in the old time freezers, minus the salty splash here and there from the rock salt. ;)

My uncle has a White Mountain 6 quart hand crank model. Had it for 20 years or so. I really like the hand crank, appreciate the 'work' and the time, etc. I got the same model from my parents 5 or 6 years ago for Christmas. The workmanship is lacking on my model. The handle fell apart after about a year and I had to get it replaced. The bucket started leaking after about a year. It's obvious that the wood dried and shrunk. I can get it to hold water now if I soak it for at least 24 hours before I make ice cream. The wood soaks up water and swells, making it water tight.

I like the nostalgia of cranking my own ice cream, but give me a break, I shouldn't have to plan a full day ahead to soak a bucket. VERY frustrating. I know my parents paid enough that they should have received a quality product.

I've had a White Mountain for a few years. My wife bought it for me for Fathers Day off Ebay. It was made back in the 20s. IMO it still makes better ice-cream compared to those new electric versions. I guess you could hook up a drill to the handle, but the kids seem to enjoy the work.

If I don't use the bucket for 6 months I need to soak it first. Too bad to hear about the poor quality of the new WM models.

My dad and I are building one using a JD hit&miss. Here's the progress so far.

Yes, the old WM has some movement in the wood paddles which is recommended, but the new one was real sloppy and works ok after I tightened them up. I also have to soak mine before I use it and the kids all like to take turns cranking. I've made several batches with my own recipe, just using Jello instant pudding mix for the flavoring. Chocolate is good and the Lemon is a different treat, it all disappears real fast. :licking:

I'd love to make one of those. Where do you get the parts?
The Garden Club has a yearly July Ice cream social and we also have a plant sale in the spring and fall to raise money for scholarships in our little town. With the hit and miss Ice cream maker we could also sell ice cream at the events to raise money for the scholarships. We could also use it at our August VFD Fundraiser.
How many gallons can you make at a time, and how much time between batches?

We make ice cream with an IH 1 1/2 hp at Fryeburg fair each year with a White Mountain Freezer 5 gallon ice cream maker. We'd love to find a back-up unit, if anyone comes across one. The new ones at Lehmans are nice, but an old WMF is nostalgic.

The freezer's a 5 gal. got the engine at an auction. The cart's made of pallet lumber, the wheel assemblies came from an old warehouse truck. Don't know how long it'll take to make a batch. Got to finish putting it together and experiment.:licking:
Country freezer makes nice units. John Deere Ice Cream Freezer
