INMATE DROWNS IN MOWING ACCIDENT

GULFPORT A state inmate who drowned in a mowing accident Thursday at Coffee Creek was three months away from being a free man.

Mireyel Scott, 33, of Leflore County was serving time on a drug conviction at a Community Corrections Work Center in Gulfport for inmates with non-violent backgrounds. He was working on a city beautification crew at the Clower-Thornton Nature Area north of East Railroad Street.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Scott was operating a large mower shortly before 10 a.m. at the edge of the creek when the ground gave way and the mower flipped. The mower landed in the water upside down, pinning Scott underneath. He was wearing a seat belt, Hargrove said.

A month or so ago in this area an inmate was struck by lightning and killed while in the exercise yard at a local prison. They say crime don't pay.

Up to the point that i read he was in for dealing drugs on the street i felt a bit sorry for him. Hope he had a bad time of it. One less dealer.

Inmates working? Ask the aclu, thats cruel and unusual punishment.
:confused2:

The problem i see is they let him ride a mower. Do like the old chain gangs used to do, give them hand swath's and rakes.

Good riddance. At least he died doing something positive for his community. Too bad he wasn't a TBN member. We could have warned him about the dangers of operating machinery near a creek bank.

I went to a local government surplus and seizure sale. I bought a load of old Tie picks used to stab slabs and ties to pull them off the conveyors in a saw mill. One town had these in its jail for inmates to pull trees out of ditches and such. They worked good but one day about 4 inmates started brawling and tie picking each other hence the liquidation.

His family will probably sue the crap out of the state and make it where we cant get any use out of them.

I have no use for drug dealers however,
If he was in jail, having served his time and about to be released, then he has (almost) paid his debt.

Unfortunately, we do not know if someone has learned there lesson or not- until we see them back in jail..... One of the faults in our justice system.

Some people make mistakes, learn their lesson and pay the price. We may never know who these people are, but we should give "first timers" the benefit of the doubt, until the time they make another poor decision.

I'm not to defend what he did or didn't do but how many of us have never broken the law?

Perhaps not dealt drugs but somewhere, somehow did something that could have landed us in front of a judge. I'll be the first to admit there were times where I did something I shouldn't have done. And no, it wasn't dealing drugs.

"They say crime don't pay."

If you want to make sure crime don't pay, let the government run it!
