Thoughts on investing in gold/silver

Don't forget...

When they passed the obama-care health insurance legislation...hidden in the bill (that nobody read) was a new tax on gold coins etc...

don't forget...some legislators who say they read the bill say it has death panels for grandmas.

We pay one way or another for those of us, who for whatever the reason don't have healtcare. It comes as no surprise that the something for nothing crowd is complaining about a tax on gold merchants....

Try to keep the politics out of the discussion, folks, or the thread will be closed.

This isn't political, just a social observation:

Manipulating human behavior for profit used to be an art. Now it's a science. As an example, did you ever sit in a living room with a group of family/friends and the TV is on? Even though there is a conversation going, most people in the room have and eye on the TV, with it's picture changing about every 2 seconds. It doesn't matter if those pictures are the actual program or the commercial. We think we're going to miss something... That's the science.

Fear mongering is also a profitable business.

Preaching to the choir is a profitable business.

Preaching fear to the choir is a very profitable business.

If that choir has been buying up gold, they will probably be disappointed.

Well said John...Couldn't agree more.

I thought all those quick, hard edits were done in tv because people have 2 second attention spans. But then the talent on tv the last I saw didn't really merit attention anyway.

Part of the problem right now is that there's no direction to know what to invest in.

Someone mentioned this already and I think it's significant. I try to keep in mind the contrarian view toward investing. That's to say when folks are running toward a particular market segment, it may be time to consider walking away from it. And when a segment is in the dumps, i.e. the 2010 real estate market or blue chips in 2009, it may be worth considering.

I'm of a mixed mind on gold right now. On the one hand, I'm not sure how overpriced it is given the number of people around the world leaving poverty. But with so many flocking to it, I have to wonder about that. On the other hand, keeping some along with other liquid assets in a portfolio is probably not a bad idea. Liquidity was king last year...and maybe it still is.

This roll your own retirement stuff gives me a headache.
