I found this on the CNN site.

"A former cellist with the rock group Electric Light Orchestra was killed Monday in a car crash involving a large bale of hay in southwestern England, local police said.

Michael Edwards, 62, was killed after a 600-kilogram hay bale (about 1,323 pounds) rolled out of a field and into the path of his van."

I'm thinking that must have been some steep terrain.

I have rolls that after being ejected from the roller, have rolled 100 yards down a hill and thru a fence. Ken Sweet

Ken,

Just curious as to what kind of slope (rise over run) it takes to get that much of a roll.

A neighbour cuts and bales hay on our land. A few years ago, he dropped a bale in our highest field that rolled across two pastures and a lane (and through 4 fences!) before coming to a stop against some trees next to the stream. They roll best when they are freshly-baled and still tight and round; its like a run-away steamroller!

I lost one over the river bluff a few years ago. If it had not hung up in the trees, it would have hit the water. Really not safe to be on foot or on a ATV in a field where baling is going on, unless you are on the "High Ground" Ken Sweet

I wish I had a picture of the old Honda big red that I had rode to the hay field one morning in the mid 80's; after I let a bale mangle it up against the tree I parked under. I think it was more like a six percent grade and it gathered plenty of momentum. I loved that old 3 wheeler.
