Get what u want and do not settle. Me and my dad had identical F150's but mind had 3.73 gears while his had 3.55 gears and mine would eat his lunch. My next one had 4.10 gears and it was a beast.

The new trans can give you the best of both worlds with a few low gears on the bottom end and some tall ones on the big end.

I can't imagine why a 3.42 would be a hit with anybody, but then you did say used as in past tense. Folks must have realized that physics didn't change with the newer transmissions. Too much media hype I guess.

I think what Diamondpilot was trying to say is that the towing capacity in the past took a big hit with a 3.42 ratio vs. a deeper 3.73 or 4.10.

As for the physics end of it, I partialy agree. No doubt a numericaly higher gear will always have more of a mechanical advantage than the lower one [for example 3.73 vs. 3.42] all other things being equal. However having 2 extra ranges in the trans makes obtaining the proper gearing for the task at hand less of a compromise over the old 4 speed transmissions . It all boils down to final drive ratio, which is the combination of trans range ratio and rear axle ratio. The engine does not care how the final drive ratio is obtained ,be it in the transmission or diffrential, the engine only cares what the final ratio is.

3:73's are still available...When I roamed a lot, 99% were 3:42, 1 was 3:73...probably trying to push the lighter gears for mileage/CAFE.

Thanks for the opinion, It seems that you like it. The 6.0 does drink gas and i'm not really sure the cost benefit is there vs a 5.3.

It's different around here. When I was looking at inventory around here, the majority of 5.3s came with the 3.08. That rig can tow about 5500lbs. No good to me and my 20ft enclosed trailer rated at 7K.
I wanted a crew in blue with the 5.3/3.42 and a sliding rear.
I found the blue and engine/gear, but few sliders around here. I may just get a ladder rack. It's safer than sliding lumber through the cab.

I have notice that most GM's around here do not have sliding rear windows either. Every Ford and my current Nissan have them and I keep it open about 90% of the time.

Wonder why GM does not put them in more?

I have the rear slider in my GM Crew. Because of the slider (I assume) there is no rear defrost as with the single pane rear. No the greatest for winter.

On the positive side, one of my dogs loves to have his nose out the window all the time, if all the other windows are closed, at anything above about 50 mph there is a buffeting effect that is quite annoying. Cracking the rear slider, even a few inches totally removes that effect and doesn't add much road / wind noise.

I've had rear sliders in previous trucks...Never cared for them, seemed heat and dust was all that came in. My current truck doesn't have one and I don't miss it at all. Different strokes I guess.

I did not have one in my 05 Dmax and really missed it. My last few Fords have had the power sliding window and that is really great.

Not to throw a bummer into all of this, but my Great Dane was admitted to the hospital this evening with low blood counts, not good. So, this will most likey delay any further truck shopping for the forseeable future. Whatever the outcome, it's going to be expensive, $1,000 today alone. He's worth it though.

Looked around yesterday and every gasser was a 3:42...Three different dealers.

I did see a black Dmax Xcab Z71 shortbed...Nice, but not 53K nice.

I wish your dog the best. My neighbor breeds Danes. Has 2 females, Shy and Mercedes, and the male Benz. He is a big boy. Last time he was weighed he was 183#. Love them dogs.

I have an 03 Z 71 with 5.3 and 3.73's and love it. It's getting long in the tooth too. Every new one I have seen has 3.08's or 3.42's, I won't have that. My friend just bought one, it rides great: way better than mine, but wouldn't pull a greasy weed out of your ---hole.
