I'm planning to buy a 72" County Line/King Kutter tiller to go behind my Kubota L3830GST. My local Tractor Supply has a 72" in inventory that looks as it has been there for some time. It has leaked a puddle of gear oil from the side gear box about 12" in diameter. Is it normal for the side gear box to leak gear oil?

Guess kingkutter countryline are the same now?My 5 ft kingkutter don't leak oil from the side and its 7-8 years old now,,wouldn't buy a new thing that is leaking gear oil,,on other hand the side of mine where that gear box is,, there are a bunch of little bolts holding that side on,without a doubt there is a gasket there,,if you could figure out where its leaking and its just a matter of loose bolts,,and if they would knock 2-3 hundred off.....

Mine (1 year old KK2 72") does it from brand new not that bad but it will leave a 1-2" puddle on the trailer when I bring it home then it stops its like it only leaks when its running and the leak is the tine shaft seal at the lower inside of the gear box if you follow me.

My Orchlens doesn't do service work and I told them I wasn't fixing it for free I have too many other irons in the fire besides its new for crissakes.

Anyway they got KK to send the seals and agreed to pay me a whopping 50 bucks it hasn't been fixed yet. I may do it this winter when things slow down then maybe I wont its still a **** good tiller even with the leak. hth

I have a 60" KK tiller. It does not leak...but after I bought it I checked those 1/4" bolts to see if they were tight. They all were pretty loose and I thought without cranking on em a bit that I would loose em or oil could leak.....so I snugged em up.

Long story short....it would not surprise me if a new one was leaking.

I have a 72" KK tiller. It works great and has never leaked a drop of oil. I will however after reading this thread check the bolts on the side cover plate.

I think the inside seal is where most leak? They are a booger to get to and replace. Ken Sweet

Thanks for the quick replies. I suspect the oil leak is caused by either loose bolts on the cover or the gasket was damaged when it was assembled. The rotor shaft seal isn't leaking. I'll ask if they will knock some off the selling price, which I doubt, or I'll look for a non-leaking CL/KK tiller that hasn't been setting out in the weather so long at one of the other nearby Tractor Supply stores. Fortunately, there are four TSC stores that do a larger volume of business than the local store within 50 miles of my home.

The KK gear drive tillers side gear box has a poly gasket that will deform if over tightened and leak. It will also leak if under tightened. Oh, the action of the soil on the bolts will allow them to unscrew and fall out. I know that one.

Easy fix is to remove the side plate, degrease the surfaces and bolt holes with brake cleaner, use RTV on both sides of the gasket and loctite blue on the bolts. Torque to spec or until the gasket just starts to bulge a wee bit. Should be good to go for a long time.
