A typical example of bureaucratic mind numbing regulations. If you wanna just cut to the chase look at the table starting on page 3-10. The columns under "Weeklt Benefit Amount/Maximum/Minimum"

I am sure it has changed a bit since the last time I collected UE benefits, but back then I collected a little under 1/3 of my average paycheck over the prior 2 quarters. Certainly not enough to maintain my lifestyle even earning the max I could without decreasing my benefits. Foodstamps were the only other gov aid I qualified for, so I needed to find a job. I could not survive on insurance payments and govt aid.

I don't know how these people can survive on fed payments, much less live long term. They must get a lot more outside of Texas in gvt payments, or things have changed a LOT since the eighties.

I don't understand, Ken Sweet. Are you paying less than people make on unemployment? I know when I was on unemployment, I certainly wasn't going to take a pay cut to go work for somebody. After paying into the program for decades, I wasn't shy about that either. It's an insurance program up here, and just like I wouldn't let my auto insurance replace my truck with a 1982 K-Car, I wouldn't let them force me to take a job that paid less than my employment insurance.

I've been uninsured for years now though...I'm self-employed, so I don't pay in and I can't draw out. I'm fine with that...cuts down on the paperwork...but when I need casual workers I never have any trouble getting them, all above board.

Just curious to know if you are offering full-time or part-time employment and if it is long-term or seasonal for a few weeks/months. I can see someone turning it down if it wasn't something that was full time or permanent if it meant that they lost their UE for good. Looks like they could draw it off of you if you laid them off, though.

With that said, the majority of the people that I know on UE aren't really looking for anything full-time or permanent, just the small odd jobs for cash. I'll never understand the logic because I believe the maximum you can draw in Alabama is about 270 dollars a week.

Full time is what I am looking for. I have a 69 yr old that is retiring in May and I need someone to be in training to take his place. Ken Sweet

As a small business owner , it makes me wonder sometimes , are the long hours , stress , etc... worth it ? At election time the politicians say " small businesses are the backbone of our country " Well , they're doing a good job at trying to break the back of a small business . I guess I have the freedom to quit , file bankrupcy , and become a dependent of the gov't ..... no way !

Unemployment is the new retirement plan. 30 years ago, I drew a maxium of 16 weeks if layed off... now it is years and years.

I have never drawed or paid a employee UI my entire life. I was under the assumption that the employer pays all the premiums into a state fund and if a employee starts to draw, the employer is responsible for part of the payment. Someone correct me if I am wrong? Ken Sweet

Yours might be different down there, but I've had an Employment Insurance deduction on every pay cheque I've ever drawn. Up here the employee pays part and the employer pays part. The government manages the program and makes the payments, but it's self-funding.

It was intended to be self-funding at 6 months to a year. But at 3 years, like the government has mandated now, most states are having to borrow money to fund unemployment. I think California has borrowed $30 billion dollars now for unemployment benefits.

In Canada the government took a bunch of money (can't remember the exact amount, but it was several billion) out of the EI fund to pay down the deficit because there was a surplus. It's not doing as well now, but it's not that bad.

We don't get anywhere close to three years worth of benefits though. I don't pay that much attention anymore, since I don't pay in and can't get benefits, but I think in most regions you can draw for less than a year.

What I'd like to see is extended benefits for those willing to go back to school, whether it's university or trades, and some help for people who want to start their own business. That would keep people from having to collect in the future.

I still don't understand Ken's dilemma though. If he's paying more than people are getting in benefits, why wouldn't they take the job?
