I'd gues after get a 6401 the MS290 will just collect dust, the 56cc 290 doesn't even cut as fast as a good 50cc saw. Steve

I agree that he doesnt "need" the kit. I only suggested it IF something were to go wrong with the top end in the near future.

As to bar length, I perfer a 24" bar. That it what I have on most of my saws. And it is NOT because we cut big wood all the time. The reason I like the 24" is because I dont have to bend over. For me, a 20" bar is harder on my back and tires me out quicker because of this.

You got that right. I love a 24" bar for nosing into the work.
4" makes a big difference

With the big bore kit your saw would go from normal to screaming fast.

I have a Dolmar 7900, which is basically the 6401 with a bigger p&c. It really rips, and it is very easy ro handle.

Isn't a longer bar more likely to "kick-back" because more bar gives you more chances to get the tip where it shouldn't be?
My saw has a 15" bar and has cut some pretty big trees. But I do have to bend over.

The 120SI is one of the BEST saws dolmar ever made.

I did not mean the 120 SI in general. It was only this one we had. Dolmar was not common here in 1990 and noone was able to say, why we received a Dolmar, cause originally the truck came wit 2 Stihl 044.

I traded in a 120 SI a few years later and it was much better.

The PS 34 is not bad and the only thing I don not like is the design, which is not really important. But it works fine and is worth every Euro.
