School District

Can you pay a teenager to babysit at your house? School districts are a problem everywhere. I would prefer to live in the country where I grew up but bought a house in town for the school district. Considering I am pushing 40 with another little one due in a few short weeks I will probably never make it back to country living. I guess thats the price for kids. My wife and I are blessed in that we have jobs that allow us pick my daughter up and keep her at our office for the couple of hours in the afternoon. In the summer we pay a teenager to keep her at our house.

Many in similar situations in CA where the option exists to either enroll in the district of residence or the district of where a parent or guardian is employed...

For most, this option gives at least 3 districts to choose from or 4 if the parents do not live together...

I work with people that have children going to school where the Grandparents live when they provide after school care... California has many regulations that provide options for parents from daycare, after school care and school districts since the bulk of funding is State and not Local.

it still sounds like you have too many reasons why the kids have to come second. Again, not trying to be harsh, but I think your priortities are not in line. If the kids are important enough you will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Ask your family in town if you can move in with them for a while until your house sells, then buy one where you want them to go to school. Move, quit a job, sell things, whatever. You have too many reasons/ excuses why you can't do it... I couldn't imaging someone else raising my kids :(

I am not looking to cheat anybody. We just need to send them to the other school. We are looking to move that direction someday but the economy has really put a kink in our plans...

I understand that. However, if you don't pay taxes in that district AND you are not willing to pay the out of district tuition AND you are looking for a way to get your children in there without actually living there, well, those are dubious conditions and it sure looks like you're trying to find a rationalization to skirt the system.

And I have to agree with all of the other comments that you are finding a lot of reasons to put work first.

Plain and simple, the kids come first. That means if you cannot afford to live where you are, work where you work and send the kids to schools that are competent and safe, you have to move, change jobs, re-prioritize, etc...

Tough situation. We did the daycare thing, and the after school thing. The problem is, you have to be there to pick them up at 5:30 p.m. no matter what. For us it was $1 a minute for every minute you are late. They both provide transportation, so they would go to your kids school and pick them up or the bus dropped them off at day care. Its also expensive.

During the summer, we paid a 17 year old girl to watch our kids two summers. It cost the same amount as daycare, but she could drive them places if needed, such as baseball, swimming etc. Once again expensive, I think we were paying her at least $250 a week. You can try to setup someone like a teenager to be at your house evenings, you can find trustworthy ones by asking around, but expect to pay them $8-$10 an hour.

Part of living in the country is driving a lot, you may not have a choice. The other choice it to try and skirt the school district boundaries by cheating, but I can't recomend that. They try and draw those boundaries fairly, but it doesn't always work out that way. You can try and change those boundaries, but its a difficult process and you probably won't have any luck with it.

I looked at where you live on the map, and your are right, its kind of in the middle of nowhere. Good luck.

I don't want to come off as "goody two shoes," but I think honesty is the best policy. IMO, that behavior is not ethical, is probably illegal, and increases the tax burden of the folks in your district. Also, I don't think it sets a good example for the kids involved.

Just my

Steve

I agree, but at least he is paying into a school system with the tax money he is paying. Look at the illegial immigrants going to school for "free", well not free to the tax paying people but free to them.
Check with an accountant, does paying taxes to this school district count as child care, if it does you can claim it.

local woman put her kids in school at her dads home, they watched her & arrested her and attempted to send her to prison for 7 years was what prosecutor wanted. the judge gave her 6 months in jail and 3 years probation all for enrolling her kids in a different school district that she didnt live in! ya talk about crooked legal system when you can be sent to jail for 7 years for attempting to get a better school for your kids!?

Like I said before --I am not trying to cheat anyone or do anything illegal...It is just not going to work out well for us to be home when the kids would get off the bus. We are still looking at possible solutions.

Thanks for all the info
