I've never seen around barn before. Is that yours or someone elses? I'd love to see pix of the inside.

I've got a book, published locally, on old barns. The round barns are from 1880 - 1920, and are of scandinavian origin. Mostly found in Minn, Wis, Michigan. One near me has a silo in the center, and a 2nd floor loft that has trap doors in the floor over the feed areas. This allowed 1 man to take care of a bunch of cows. One reason there isn't more of them is that they were more expensive to build, you needed a better than average builder to build a round structure.

Don't know where this is, but sad so see the gov't put a road that close to someone's property. Just asking for a collision.

There's one like that around here. But the road was there when the barn was built, the owner wanted it close to the road. Of course the road was dirt, and had very little traffic then. It has been hit several times.

The first two are of barns back in the Eagle cap wilderness. the 3rd one is the old home place of an 87yr. young friend that still works her own garden.

Not mine. :)

1840s dairy barn in Vermont on property that used to belong to friends. The stone foundation for an attached silo is visible in the ground (but not in the picture) just outside the white door. Photos were taken in 2005.

This barn belongs to my Father in law. The foundation is sinking and it is ready to fall down. He wants to burn it down this spring. I know it would cost more to fix it then its worth but I really am having a fit every time he mentions burning it. It sits behind our house and I just hate to see it go. Any ideas on how to get the foundation from sinking?

Great thread... I grew up in upstate NY during a time when dairy farms were every few miles down the road. The barns were functional as well as beautiful.

How about this barn?... party theme for my grandaughter's first birthday!

It depends on the foundation but no matter what type it would be labour intensive. Is it pole barn, logs on ground or a regular foundation you might find on a house?

One problem with old barns is that they aren't all that usefull. I did some work for someone that had a old, really nice barn, but it needed work. He said they are more of a liability than a asset. They are to small for modern equipment, people put hay in big round bails, and so many farmers don't have livestock. Unless the owner wants to fix them up as a matter of pride, a lot of them will fall apart.

There is a really nice round barn in this area, near Colchester Illlinois, that is in need of repair.
