If you use your tractor to "MOW THE LAWN" ,sorry its a Yuppie tractor.Simple as that.:)

Picked up some hay from my local, crusty farmer, and asked him about his tractors. He suggested staying away from tractor models that are designed for yuppies, and priced accordingly. He suggested getting a farmer's tractor that would be priced for a farmer's budget.

Can anyone elaborate on what this means? I don't need a huge tractor, but was considering a compact around 40 hsp. What exactly is a yuppie Kubota?

Thanks

Kind of an odd statement from the "crusty farmer" as he presumably must have known he was talking to a "yuppie" given that you asked him about his tractors. Still, I'd guess he was suggesting a basic tractor like the B7800 compared to the "yuppie" B3030. Similarly the M series vs the LG series etc. I presume he'd also recommend a bare bones F150 over the King Ranch edition etc.

I personally wouldn't pay much attention to an old codger like that as he probably hasn't looked at new tractors recently and likely has very different priorities when it comes to purchasing farm equipment.

ok guys im 1 of them crusty old farmers.an i can see an understand that farmers point of view.an he is right in some ways,to me a real tractor is 40hp an above but thats just me.anything below that is yuppie tractors, for those that own those 10ac ranchetts.that need a small tractor for mowing an up keep of their place.an yes they boost the prices on said sub compact tractors.im not trying to step on any1s toes with my statements.the MX5100 i have is a farm tractor.it hauls hay pulls trailers shredds an clears brush.an in the future itll prolly be used to bale hay unless i change my mind.

I'm a farmer as well (albeit not as old as some) and I consider anything that is widely used for agricultural production to be a 'non-yuppie' tractor. Depending on where you go people might say the B series, L series or even M-series are the smallest 'real tractors' Kubota makes, although some still don't think even the largest M-series are real tractors. In many parts of the world the smallest B-series are the primary tractor for agricultural production, with a few L series used for larger tasks. In fact I would bet worldwide the B-series are used for more agricultural production than the M-series. With that said, I don't know of any part of the world that uses BX's for production related work, so some might consider that a 'yuppie tractor.'

I believe this topic is related to a recent one on the subject of what tractors in this forum will still be running and productive in 40 years. The ag tractors Farmer Jack is referring to are just getting broke in at 4000 hours and the cranks, liners, pistons and pumps are in stock at dealers at affordable prices for the rebuild. And, Farmer Jack may be the one doing the rebuild. In my latest issue of Michigan Farm Trader, there are quite a few machines with OVER 8000 hours on them! That's not gonna happen with your or my CUT. When it blows up, the repair will be more that the value. (An 'underwater' tractor??). Not so with a JD 4430 or maybe a 4020 around here (just for example). Just look through these Forum topics and take inventory on all the bent, broke, mangled, blowed up, fell off, plastic, seals, cracked glass, etc. issues the suburbanites are having with tractors their wives would take better care of (OMG: the belt came off and I can't get it back on). That ain't the case with an ag line Green, Orange, Red, or Blue farm tractor.

ok im going to jump in here again.ive got a 78 7700 ford w/fel that has 20,000hrs on it.motor replaced at 3200hrs or so because ford put bad motors in them that the block would crack after so long.it hasnt been back in the shop since.just normal repairs.now for your sub compacts an compact tractors.most people will be lucky if they put 25 to 50hrs a year on them.so if they start crapping out at 2000 to 40000hrs,that means that they are 20 to 40yrs old.wich means they last some people a lifetime.

This means I'd continue to purchase hay from him but it would be prudent to seek tractor advise elsewhere.

This reminds me of when I used to fly RC airplanes. Sometimes people would show up at the flying field and comment about how our airplanes looked and flew just like "real" airplanes. Well, the models have engines, rudders, ailerons, wings, they are in fact "real" airplanes, I mean....they do fly, right? Just because they don't carry people doesn't make them any less real, just different.

Same with tractors. If it looks like a tractor and gets used like a tractor, it is a tractor.

Ya gotta watch those labels.... I'm betting the same fellow that used the term "yuppies" also calls anyone that disagrees with him a "liberal" or a "radical"...
I'm not a farmer but I've got 220 acres of ranch land. I run an L2800 with FEL and serves my purpose. Does everything I ask of it and more.
I suggest that, if you need a tractor, shop around and find one that suits your needs and disregard advice from most people... especially those that offer advice without being asked.

My L3940, with its HST Plus, cruise control, reclining cushy swiveling seat with arm rests, digital dashboard, telescoping lower link ends, tilt wheel, floor pad, etc., is probably about as "yuppie" as a tractor can get, & that label doesn't bother me at all: I like my bells, whistles & comfort, & it still has the power & size to do what I want & need it to do very well.

About the only comfort feature mine lacks is a cab, but I think I have way too many trees.
