LostInTheWoods, I just realized you have a more immediate problem than weather alerts....you need a GPS that tells you:

proceed to the large forked Live Oak tree
turn left
proceed .5 miles to the sunny meadow
now that you are no longer in the Woods, where do you want to go today:laughing:

Best wishes on your quest for relevant and immediate weather information:thumbsup:

Nah, would never help me...

proceed to the large forked Live Oak tree

...Which large forked oak tree? (There are at least three you can see from the house)

turn left

...my left, or the tree's left?

proceed .5 miles to the sunny meadow

...haven't seen much sun here for a few days.

Some people you just can't help...;):D

I have no experience with them, so I don't know of the options available. I decided not to have one as I live at the intersection of three counties. I rely on TV newscasts for potential problems. Many of the HDTV channels have an optional weather channel with a radar presentation in case you don't have cable TV with the actual "Whether Channel" to watch. The Internet also offers several presentations of radar scans from the local weather bureau. I have a science background, so I favor an Internet radar scan for my needs. Maybe it's not the best, but at least I don't have three counties blaring information at me.

Thats good for when your awake and know about weather but when your sleeping and a front comes through or a severe cell pops up what good will your internet scan do in alerting you to changing conditions, of if your in the kitchen cooking or cleaning up or reading or working in the shop?

I like the volonteer firestation siren which sounds for three reasons, fire/emt call, tornado warning or watch. I get up in the middle of the night when i hear it look out the window if the stars are out im sure its a fire call if there are clouds i go straight to the computer or tv to see if were about to get slammed and hope that if we are i have a min or two to bring up the weather.

I have a First Alert WX-268. It's rather useless since the alarm had to be turned off. It would go off randomly 24/7 regardless of weather conditions.

We have weather alert by telephone, the county judge executive call with a recorded message when a storm is coming. The last four times he's called, the storm is already out of the county, just goes to show, you can't trust politicians.

I have had a few and the WX-150 is the best one so far. You can select the alerts, and I like that you can put rechargeable batteries in it.

Thought I would bring this thread back to the top after this latest blast of weather going through.

I need to replace my old hand held crackly hard to understand Realistic weather radio with another hand held unit with the ability to focus on tornadoes only. Anything new out there on the market that someone could recommend?

you want tornado warnings only?! I don't think you can buy one that does just that. NOAA broadcast whatever is necessary for the area on a single frequency.
That said, I have midland radio for 8 yrs now, I dont see any way to get something better as anything that can listen to noaa broadcast works just fine.

I can follow what is going on via TV until the rain knocks out my satillite dish and we have DSL but it gets really slow during peak times. I think the weather sites get slow at the same time due to multiple users wanting to see what is going on.

The "knobs" where I live seem to break up the straight line winds pretty well and our house is high and dry so my main concern is tornadoes. I want a hand held unit so I can move it around the house.

I found this Oregon Scientific hand held along with this Midland. Either model looks like what I may be looking for. I had called the number for this site and asked for further info but they have not gotten back to me yet.
