I was at my local welding supply store a few weeks ago, and he gave me some 80t AC plus rods to try. he said they were high strength, easy to use, and made nice welds. I was using 7018 rods in my latest project, and I was doing fine. Unfortunately I left the whole can of 7018 rods out, with the cap off. I didn't want to take a chance with the 7018 rods, being a little damp, so I tried the 80t rods. All I can say is wow! They were quiet, low splatter, easy to strike, and they made my welds look like I actually knew how to weld. I was burning them with the Everlast power arc 200 (dc). If you are an amateur welder like me, I would give them a try. I went back to the store, and bought 10 pounds, to finish up the project. Don't get me wrong, I would not use these rods as an all in one rod, I would still use a 6010, for the root pass on something heavy duty like a tractor implement, but I think I would make the rest of the passes with this rod. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Sounds impressive.
I tried looking it up, but can't find out much on the internet.
Who makes it?

How are they priced to 7018, and can they be used for the root pass?

MG 80T AC. I used to sell it. It was marketed as an 80,000 tensile 6013 rod. It really has no AWS Classification because it was once a propriatory formula..All I can say is I still use it. You have to try it. Runs like 6013, Holds like 8018..

Yes sir. If you could boil t down.. I once worked for a filler metal company that send 10 sticks to Ohio State for evaluation. ( they do that ) The end result was yes, It is 80+,000 tensile. that is all they would say. I hate to pitch an MG rod but you can strike an arc and lay the stinger down..It will weld until the rod is gone..Done it, Like to show it..

reminds me of a brand I found once at the local gas dealer.. was called 'ez' or easystrike or similar. I swear you could strike an arc on a wet napkin with one.. mu guess is they were closer to the performance of a 6013 though looking at the weld / penetration / surface.. just easy to strike and hold an arc.. even on those lil 120v buzzboxes..
