I just SCORED a good JD#39 sickle mower. Got it mounted to the tractor (yup, B2410) and it works! I can lift and carry the mower ok, it's not unstable or tippy at all but in transport position the front end is a little light, but no worse than with the tiller :)

Can anyone help me? He didn't have the OM for the unit and neither does the local JD dealer, although they would gladly order it for me for about $40 :(

I understand the general operation and lubrication points but am having difficulty understanding how the lift (drawbar) system is SUPPOSED to be set-up.

As it sits right now, there are two large cast plates attached the to mower arms with u-bolts, big ones. When I raise the mower these contact the bottom of the drawbar arms causing the upper "hoop" on the mower to pivot forward.

It appears that this is supposed to add pressure to the sickle lift-arm spring making it easier to raise the bar for transport. What I don't know is exactly what it is SUPPOSED to look like when correctly installed.

Photos would be a godsend.

Thanks friends!

Have you tried jdparts ?

Yes, I agree. Photos would be good. And where are they? :D

They would help in answering your questions.

Does it look like this?

Thanks, I will check JD parts.

I felt sort of foolish after posting this, it was pointed out that Google might be a good resource and it was..... sort of. I now think I know where the parts go and what it should look like, I just need to understand why.

Off to JD parts....

Those are part of your stabilizing system on the 9 and 39 mowers. You must have a U-bolt to run through the 2 holes in the upright cast pieces and attach both of them to the lift arms of the tractor. This will keep the mower from swaying left to right. Ken Sweet

Thanks Ken! That makes a lot of sense, I did not get the coorisponding iron pieces for the lower links but if I turn those I have around 180* so they fit on the outside of the lower links that should do the job. I found half a dozen decent photos on Google that show what it is supposed to look like when connected correctly.

Off to work!

I have a #9 coming out of the shop tomorrow. I will try to post a pic. We could not find the U-bolts and made clamps out of flat stock. Ken Sweet

Well I *think* I have everything installed as well as possible. Brief testing proves it works, that is, cuts "hay".

I have to set the top link correctly then the angle of the cutter bar as it's pointed more than "slightly" upward now ;)

From the photos online, it looks like the main portion (pto/drive case) is green with a yellow cutter bar and wing. Going to get some JD green and yellow to brighten it up, but I want to be sure the right color goes on the right parts and will take before/after photos to show I am not trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

Here is a pic of a #9 with the same stabilizer clamps as a #39. We did not have the U clamps and made the clamps out of flat stock. Ken Sweet

Thanks Ken!

I elected NOT to install "clamps" to the lower lift arms on the tractor to make removal easier and I really do not see the need with the sway links correctly adjusted.
