Yanmar 1300d
I have a 1300D that I use for therapy. Well..... also to mow some and work on the long driveway. I think it may have spun a bearing. Have it in to a local mechanic who will look it over to see how bad it is. He said if it has hurt the crank it will be in the $3500 range to re-build the engine. Is that in the ball park? If so it seems better to put that $ toward a newer and larger machine. What do you all think?

Thanks

I paid right at $869 for a used certified crank, new rod and main bearings, 1 rod, gaskets, Hasting rings, and oil and filter. Labor was $1080. Supposedly got a little break on parts pricing. Total bill was a hair less than $2000. This was for a ym2002d. In my opinion $3500 is going to be as much as the tractor is worth. Whats my Yanmar tractor worth? Good luck whatever you decide.

I think a zero time rebuild of a 1300d without FEL would be well short of $4500. That would include new pistons, rings, connecting rod bearings, crank bearings, water pump, head job, exhaust manifold, voltage reg., hoses, radiator, fuel tank, new tires, fuel pump rebuild, and complete strip prime and paint. So you decide.

My advice is my standard rap in a case like this....give Bruce Laten ( TBN member Bruce1966us) a call (931)492-0316. He stocks/sells a lot of Yanmar engines and from what I've seen in the past, a similar complete, test run motor shipped to your residence would probably be about as much as the labor quote Winston1 gave. Very reputable guy...you can't go wrong.

IMO you would be better to use that money on a different machine and part that one out.
As an alternative perhaps, I had a local high school vocational ag program rebuild my 336d after it overheated and it was MUCH less than that. I had new liners, valves, rebuilt the injectors etc. Maybe even new pistons, I do not recall now. Now I had to wait almost a year for its repair, I have used them before and am satisfied but part of the deal is it often takes an entire school year.
I only paid $3700 for my 336d when it was about 6 years old and had less than 800 hours on it and it had the factory FEL, a heavy rear grader blade and one other attachment. Deals are out there if one is in no particular hurry. Mine is not a grey market tractor. The overheating was many years after I had purchased it, it ran well when I got it.

i would never spend $3500 on a rebuild, especially on a yanmar that small. Its worth more as parts at this point. Good luck.

I ahve to agree here. You have $3000 +/- tractor when running good that needs $3500 overhaul. See if you can find a used engine to slip into it without major cost, if not put the $3500 towards something else and part it out.

$3500 sounds like a full rebuild. Is the whole thing worn out?

You might get lucky and find grinding the crank undersize is all it needs.

Or for the light duty you describe, maybe welding the crank back up to spec and replacing the related rod etc could get you back in the saddle for a lot less. I suggest research who can weld a crank and how much this would cost.

Plus of course look for a replacement crank or engine but that cost might not be justified.

I think this mechanic is proposing a top to bottom overhaul. See if you can find another opinion on what it really needs.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will call about the engines after I see what the final verdict is when he actually pulls it open on Monday. Hoping it is not as bad as he thinks. All of your advice helps a lot. Thanks

Oh! Yes he was talking about a total overhaul. In a way it makes sense. If it has to come apart down to the crank why not put new parts back and have a new engine? Seems that saving a couple of hundred would not be worth leaving unknown weaknesses in there. I don't believe I will do it but it makes sense IF it is to be rebuilt. This tractor does have an Apple Valley FEL on it. Brush hog and box scraper I'll just keep.
